1. It's odd...
I grew up on NY but life in California now. It's mainly Southern Californians that say "the 405" but it's starting to creep up north. I hear it more and more often here. Still sounds strange to my ears.

3. I Grew Up in New Jersey
Every highway had "Route" in front of it, whether it was a state, US, or Interstate Road. Here in Colorado, they differentiate - the Interstate is "I-25", the main east-west highway that goes through Pueblo is "US 50", and the state road that parallels it for a few miles is "Colorado 96".

2. A little more regional than that...

it's an LA thing. Very few in the Bay Area say "the XXX".
Don't know why LA started this, but it's universal there...
I travel back and forth and find myself changing to match
the locale... for example when I'm in the Bay Area, I say
"Take 101 north to Lawrence..." but when I'm in LA, I'll
say "Take the 101 to the 405...". Crazy, huh? and it's even
the same damn highway.
