Does cursing bug you?
I don't mind cursing, but i hate when people use a curse as a period. Even worse, when it's used as a comma! A curse should only be used as an exclamation.

I just got home from food shopping. This guy outside the store was talking on his phone, and every other world was fuck this, and fuck that!

1. I swear way too much....
... but I come by it honestly. If I can tell it is bothering someone, I will make an effort to curtail it :)

17. God Dammit!
I should have figured it was wrong. Bearshare(The Prog I use to DL music) had it under Mozart, Bethoven, and Bach. Funnily enough, I was stoned when I DLed it too and I just picked one at random.

Thanks for the info though. I'll have to change it :)

3. I don't mind it much
When it's every other word, yeah, that bugs me. When it's used for emphasis or exclamation, it doesn't bother me. My speech changes dramatically depending on who I'm around!

Actually, I curse all the time and quite frequently. I think it just another way to pepper your speech with color points and declarations, dammit. :-)

6. hell yes....
All kidding aside, I don't usually curse unless I'm in sudden pain, and I do find it appalling when people manage to work "fuckin'" into every other sentence.

'The Rape of the Ape*'

*American Puritan Ethic

In the book Sherman had, IIRC, three entire pages of the word FUCK and nothing else. Great read!

Right here with you Wcross. I just don't like it. Don't do it myself. It's funny, but as I think about my family and friends, NONE of them swear. No one is so religious that that would be the reason why. They just don't swear.

Its a matter of respecting those you are talking to. I am an ex-Marine so I have heard my fair share of cussing and foul language, I don't care to hear anymore.

23. Fuck, no! But you know what does bug me?
When someone tells me that I curse too much.
When someone automatically assumes a person is ignorant just because he or she curses.
When someone won't watch a great movie "because there's too much swearing in it."
When a friend I've had since high school hangs up on me while discussing the subject of the previous sentence and then doesn't speak to me again for about three or four years.

My response to these things: :wtf:

24. Swearing is not bad
as long as it is not over used and used only in appropriate situations, meaning informal situations in the presence of peers. One thing I don't like to see is young children swearing in front of adults.

25. Who really needs cursing? Fuck Yeah No Shit
Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 03:50 AM by Bernardo de La Paz
When pondering the essays posted here, I rarely if ever need to be reminded of excrement. On the other hand, "fuck" and its variants have much more glorious associations. This can be summarized pithily as "Fuck Yeah, No Shit".

Aside from trite observations like the above, who really needs cursing? There are some legitimate uses:

* Comedians, for when we feel like indulging in potty jokes. A good potty joke goes a long way here and there. Occasionally there can be very witty use of vulgarity.

* Social commentators focusing on the words themselves, like Lenny Bruce and George Carlin.

* Erotica and pornography.

* Literary or filmic portrayal of some cultures and characters.

* Honest and pure astonishment or surprise or terror.

Most of the other common usages are illegitimate:

* Anger is perceived by those receiving it as "a thoughtless person venting their toxic anger in public".

* Bullying. Disarm the bully with wit.

The remaining use is trivial but can be ugly:

* Reflexive usage due to upbringing that hasn't been over-ridden.

Beyond that, if you can't express yourself without using ugly language, then maybe you haven't thought deeply enough about your concepts.

27. I agree with you exactly.
I don't like it from kids, and I hate it used in excess, but there is a time and place for it. Constant cursing makes you sound like you have no education, vocabulary, or class.

29. Yeah, I think it sounds trashy, to be used in extreme
situations when no other words will do.

My daughter uses trashy language and I can't stand it, I told her she needs to learn more adjectives.

We have a running "joke", she gets paid .25 every time she uses a sophisticated word in context.
