Question for DU guys with beards
I've got a good two-week beard happening, nicely trimmed etc. It is starting to itch the bejezzus out of me. Is there a conditioner or shampoo I can get to take the edge off?

1. Time
as I recall that is all that worked for me. Keep it moist, frequent face washing, showers seem to help. There might be something out there, but I never found it.

12. I second that
Only guys with "problems" should grow beards.

Will has a very cute face :loveya:.

Showering first ;-)

Scotch also helps...Just stay tanked all the time, it won't itch...

I now let mine grow a week then have it trimmed right down. Shampoo it every day when I shower. No problems.

16. Only time will help. Don't know what causes it, but it will go away.
Eventually.

Tips from someone who sports a goatee (actually, for purists, a Van Dyke)...

Invest in a good mustache comb. Helps slough off the dead skin that normally would be taken care of with shaving. Pretty good for the occasional itch, too.

Get a good electric beard trimmer. Worth it's weight in (insert name of your favorite precious metal here.) Keeps it nice and tidy. Nobody wants to be mistaken from Charlie Manson. (Almost no one, anyway.)

Hope these help.

And scratch away. The itching will end soon.

Also, make a point of washing it just like you do your hair-use shampoo, lather it up, etc.

26. Nope!
Facial hair, especially a beard, is almost always an improvement, IMO. I hope Will will share a picture with us?

I'll chime in and agree with those who say frequent shampooing will help. What's itching is the hairs scraping along your skin as they grow; a vigorous shampooing will move things around. Could be dead skin flaking away, too, that normally gets exfoliated. Another reason to shampoo.

20. Don't worry about all these damn "remedies"
Give it a couple days, shave your neck up to a given line.

Just like your nuts haven't itched for the last 20 odd years of your life, neither will your beard after it gets to a length and your skin gets used to it.

You won't even know it's there after awhile.

24. Wait a minute:
The nuts aren't supposed to itch? Uh oh....

(As for the beard question, add me to the "the itching will go away soon" bandwagon. Although regular shampoo and trimming is a must.)

21. What my husband does -
He's had a beard on and off for 30 years. Soak your face in hot water, Take creamy baby oil and rub it into your face, Use a towel to wipe as much as possible off your beard.

After it has grown out be careful of harsh soap that dries your skin and try using shampoo containing conditioner to keep it soft.

Oh, don't let your beard "air dry" in these NE winters because your skin will get itchy again, use a towel or (in Hubby's case) the blow dryer.

22. Never itched
I've had 2-1/2 beards. Never had an itching problem. My women friends preferred my mug without it. So I'm clean faced. But at some time in your life, you have to try it out.

My half beard? It's what grew out while I was trekking Nepal. Had a barber give me my first and only shave with a cut throat razor. Probably the best shave I've ever had.

Crisis at work and no time to shave.

Brought a razor with me but no time to run off and use it.

Should I grow a beard?

32. When it itches, use a comb to scratch it.
It will scratch the itch relatively evenly until time lets you get used to it. I've got a goatee and can't feel it, but when first growing it I came close to shaving it off many times.

36. Didn't have too much of an itching problem
I didn't have too much of a choice in growing a beard. When I used to shave everyday my face would turn beet red and burn like hell constantly. I tried electric shavers, blades, aftershaves and pre-shave lotions - nothing helped.

45. You get used to it
Although it will start to itch if it's been a while between showers. When new hair is growing, it inevitably causes a certain amount of discomfort (cf. shaving the genitals).

When I wash my hair I work some of the lather into the beard, seems to work just fine.
