I dropped 10*C!
I got the Thermaltake Xaser II LANfire for myself as a birthday present. The case -found here- is running really cool. It dropped my core temp (running D3 at highest settings) from 58c to 45.9c. If you're thinking about getting a new case, and do a lot of high end gaming, I would recommend you look into the Thermaltake cases.

1. What is this "C" you speak of?
Is that short for cubit?

2. that's cool, but is there any performance diff?
if it's running stable at 58, who cares?

8. When you're running at 58 degrees...
there isn't much room for high end gaming. At medium settings on Doom III, I would run 58/59. I would never be able to play future games like Halflife 2 at that tempurature!

13. you're telling me that your upper level of performance...
is regulated not by the ability of your card, but rather by the temp in your case?

14. Absolutely.
But not just case temp, the temp of the CPU and the temp of the graphics chip also play a large role.

If temps get too high, first you will see errors which require recalculation (and consequently a dip in performance), if heat continues to rise you will see visual artifacts, as it continues to rise, you'll see system instability and crashing or freezing, all related to heat.

Heat has an enormous amount to do with it.

15. I know excessive heat hurts, but
isn't hardware manufactured such that even under 100% load, you don't hit these high temps?

then again, i guess it's hard to say for sure what the temp will reach when you don't make the whole widget.

16. In theory, hardware is manufactured that way, in practice. . .
There are too many variables for that to be considered absolutely true. If you put those components in a cases without proper air flow, the built-in cooling can't function properly. So, a cheap, generic case will usually create problems because it doesn't offer sufficient airflow to allow the cooling of each component to function properly.

4. Nah, I'll stick with my Vapochill :)
Have my Athlon 2500 oc'ed to 2.5 ghz and still sitting at a cool -20c :)

I used to use air cooling, but it was too loud. Went with water cooling for a while, and that was great, but I got an offer on a really cheap Vapochill and couldn't pass it up. I haven't regretted it for a second. Going on almost a year now with zero downtime other than installing new drivers and such, and swapping the video card a while back to put in my 9800xt.

5. I've got to say that's the most arcane jargon I've ever seen in one post..
I can honestly say I have no idea what the subject matter is.

That's no slam, that's how out of touch I am regarding _________ .

(I'll fill that in after I hit the link.)

11. well
My case is insulated with foam, half the components use passive heatsinks and yet it never goes warmer than the mid 40s (with 30°C room temperature!).

And it is almost totally silent!

12. my son built one
just about like this..really cool and it does really work well. he wanted to build a liquid cooled one but that got to be to much work. it really is amazing how much better they work when you lower the temp..
