17. how come everyone loves to hate this song?
Even VH-1 gave it number one in the Worse Songs Ever Countdown. I like it, and Grace's vocals were as excellent as always. It's definatly a separation from the "old" but who says that has to be a bad thing?

20. I don't hate it, but it's remarkably insipid.
"We Built This City" gives new meaning to the words "utterly forgettable"

30. No, actually, that was....
StarSHIT.

A cheesy corporate pop band featuring absolutely NO original members of the Jefferson Airplane. (Grace joined on their second album)

6. Miracles
However...
My favorite by the people in the group is reJoyce (from After Bathing at Baxters), which contains one of my favorite lines in music, "I'd rather have my country die for me".

8. The blessed silence when the record ended
My gods, the Airplane were so great - Surrealistic Pillow and After Bathing at Baxter's, even Volunteers, are all amazing records. And then my mother brought home Red Octopus one day and played it all the freaking time. Auuuggggghhhh~ if only I believed in miracles, baby, I'd never have to hear that goddamn song again!

22. What's the longest a music thread has ever been allowed to live -
before devolving into a "your-favorite-band-sucks" thread?

Guess I never learn.

24. Not you in particular.
It is sort of a serious question, actually. Is every music appreciation thread doomed to get hijacked in that way? And how long does it normally take?

My guess is yes, it is, and often within a dozen posts.

from the best and real Jefferson Starship

People forget that the original Jefferson Starship was a side project
and included Garcia among others.

14. Does the 1970 Paul Kantner album count?
"Blows Against the Empire", billed as Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship.

Remarkable album.

21. of course it does

See my post above.

I saw Jefferson Starship on their first tour. It was still basically Airplane. Papa John was still in the band. So was Freiberg. They did a bunch of Airplane stuff & played an entire side of Blows Against the Empire.
It wasn't really until Red Octopus (2nd album) that they started to suck.

26. They had their moments afterward
Red Octopus had a few good songs and I even like "Find Your Way Back" and "Layin' It on the Line". But the Blows Against the Empire album blows everything else Starship ever did out of the water.

28. Did you know it has a companion album?
Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 02:34 PM by 56kid
David Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name" was recorded about the same time with the same bunch of musicians.

"With guest appearances by such famous friends as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, and Jerry Garcia, it's a fascinating chapter in an always-interesting career that's all too often been overshadowed by headlines."

29. I haven't heard that one
Sounds like one to try and track down.

There was another "sequel" album by Paul Kantner, "Planet Earth Rock & Roll Orchestra" which I think came out in 1983 or 1984. That one didn't impress me too much.

Brings back a lot of memories from my freshman year in college. Without sentiment, it's probably "Save Your Love" from the same album.
