Goodbye, Dave Matthews Band!
Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 04:44 PM by VolcanoJen
So, I'm a member of The Warehouse, which is the official Dave Matthews Band fan club.

I joined the fan club the first day it came into existence seven years or so ago, and because of that, I'm treated to face-value tickets in the first five rows to just about any of the band's shows I'm interested in. It was a combination of good luck, good will and good timing, and I'm thankful for it. My favorite band in the world, and I get to be right up front every night. I've grown evermore popular among my friends because of my Warehouse "status."

The Warehouse also has a message board, and the funniest post EVER was submitted a few days ago... this fella is giving up his Dave Matthews fandom, because of Dave's involvement in the upcoming Vote For Change tour. Thought I'd share it with my DU Family. :-)

OH, and since this guy has no love left for Dave Matthews, I do hope he enjoys his Wayne Newton and Toby Keith shows in the future. :D

Goodbye DMB (trippindoogies)

To whom it may (not) concern,

We have been lifetime fans of DMB but have completely and utterly withdrawn our support from an organization that cannot keep it's political fanatacism in check. Whether you realize it or not, stumping for a candidate for political office who, to a large part of your fan base, represents a weaker america, higher taxes on the middle class, ballooning government, infanticide, homosexual marriage et, etc. etc. will have the stunning effect of alienanting them and relegating your 'ACT' to the trash heap of all things French and Canadian.

You will see that politics is a serious business in America and if you get involved the way you are doing, and draw a line in the sand, every single one of your fans who stands on the other side of that line will have to let you go. It is sad too because the music is really what it is all about. That's what draws people, and after a lifetime of study I cannot find one thing in the music that says DMB is only for one kind of listener. This political move, however, does that. Unequivocally.

Look around you at the people you are sharing the stage with on this tour and ask yourself how their careers are going. Check back in 3 years and ask the same thing. Hopefully you will cease to exist completely on the national stage and end up playing circus tents at county fairs for beer money.

Greg Duggan

Former DMB Fan

It's so difficult to hold onto band-love when your favorite band supports homosexual marriage and infanticide, isn't it? :eyes:

It's about European colonialism in Africa, for those who aren't aware...

Here's the hitch, your horse is leaving,
Don't miss your boat, it's leaving now
And as you go I will spread my wings
Yes I will call this home

I have no time to justify to you
Fool you're blind, move aside for me
All I can say to you, my new neighbor
Is you must move on or I will bury you

Now as I rest my feet by this fire
Those hands once warmed here
But I have retired them
I can breathe my own air
And I can sleep more soundly
Upon these pour souls
I'll build heaven and call it home
'Cause you're all dead now.

And I live with my justice
And I live with my greedy need
Oh I live with no mercy
And I live with my frenzied feeding
And I live with my hatred
And I live with my jealousy
Oh I live with the notion
That I don't need anyone but me

Don't drink the water
Don't drink the water
Blood in the water
Don't drink the water

13. It is a killer song
and extremely political. Where has this "fan" been all of this time?

I've always said that DMB's music either has a political undertone or an undertone of sex to it - "Crush", for example.

I used to be a member of Warehouse too (joined to get the good seats and managed to get the worse in the house, but that is another story). I quit listening to DMB because, in my opinion, their music started to suck. Damn you Glen Ballard! But man, I may have to get out the old cd's and dust them off.

Could I have been anyone other than me???

9. Glen Ballard sucks indeed... but you should really buy "Busted Stuff."
That's the album that was scrapped in favor of the Ballard sessions. It's one of my favorite DMB albums.

I lucked out in the Warehouse because I have top-dog seniority. Many of the responses to this assclown's posts say "Woohooo!!! I just moved up in seniority... thanks for the better seats, asswipe!"

6. ROTFLMAO - Yeah, what is the idea? Politics in Rock music?
Right up there with Gov Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota the other day chastizing Springsteen for serving up politics instead of music - Timmy said, "I love his music but he should leave politics out of it".

Ha, anyone who listens to lyrics would know that both of these artists have left leanings and to claim otherwise indicates serious denial or a very slight understanding of the artist.

7. I doubt this person was ever a real DMB fan
I've been to four DMB shows, one in Denver, two in Texas, and one in Oklahoma City.

This quote is telling:
"Whether you realize it or not, stumping for a candidate for political office who, to a large part of your fan base, represents a weaker america, higher taxes on the middle class, ballooning government, infanticide, homosexual marriage et, etc. etc. will have the stunning effect of alienanting them and relegating your 'ACT' to the trash heap of all things French and Canadian."

Now, I'm not a Super Fan in the sense that I follow the band all summer long, but I've been to enough shows to understand clearly that John Q. DMB FAN most likely isn't a Repug in any way shape or form. You do see all types, but the band's fans are predominantly progressive, at least that's been my experience at the shows I've attended in heavily Repug areas.

It's tragic, really. Dave's message is intended for people like this poster, and it's sad that it's lost on him.

At any rate, it's encouraging to know that all of the talent is on our side, and those are going to be some kick-ass shows in the Vote For Change tour this fall!

Band's driver denies drenching boat
Dave Matthews in town for shows, but buses `parked'

By Michael Hawthorne
Tribune staff reporter
Published August 10, 2004

The bus driver for rock star Dave Matthews called from the road Monday to say his luxury coach was not the one responsible for dousing passengers on a Chicago River tour boat with foul-smelling muck over the weekend.

Witnesses on the architectural sightseeing cruise told police they saw a long black tour bus dump liquid waste Sunday afternoon as their boat crossed under the Kinzie Street bridge.

About two-thirds of the passengers seated on the upper deck of Chicago's Little Lady were soaked with the "brownish-yellow" substance.

One witness gave Chicago police an Oregon license plate number that belongs to the 2003 Monaco Royale Coach driven by Jerry Fitzpatrick, who has been Matthews' tour bus driver for three years.

The bus driver for rock star Dave Matthews called from the road Monday to say his luxury coach was not the one responsible for dousing passengers on a Chicago River tour boat with foul-smelling muck over the weekend.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE reports: Witnesses on the architectural sightseeing cruise told police they saw a long black tour bus dump liquid waste Sunday afternoon as their boat crossed under the Kinzie Street bridge.

Fitzpatrick confirmed he was in Chicago with Matthews, whose band played the second of two shows at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin later that night. But the driver said he was parked in front of the Peninsula Hotel, 108 E. Superior St., when the waste rained down from the bridge several blocks away.

"There is no way I could be responsible for that," Fitzpatrick said from downstate Effingham. "I haven't emptied the tank for days. Besides, we are very cautious about how we do that sort of thing."

To bolster his case, Fitzpatrick coaxed Sgt. Paul Gardner of the Effingham Police Department to inspect the bus. He then gave Gardner his cell phone to tell a reporter that the tank was nearly full.

"One of the strangest requests I've ever had, that's for sure," Gardner said.

A publicist for the Dave Matthews Band issued a statement Monday night saying the group's management had "determined that all of the buses on our tour were parked at the time of this incident."

Developing.

Re: Goodbye DMB (ca420)

WOW are we living in AMERICA still????? Is there not a right to FREEDOM of SPEACH and FREEDOM of EXPRESSION!!!!????? Which you have clearly exercised YOUR FREEDOMS by your statement!!! And with the FREEDOM of CHOICE you have chosen to be very close minded I think and I have to only assume you don't allow others to have any sort of political view besides that of yours around you!!! Which again ONLY IN AMERICA!!!! You don't have to agree with everyones opinion but to not still enjoy the musical genius that is DMB because of their views seems a little CRAZY to me!!!!! did you know his political stance when you became a fan????? Do you REALLY THINK he has ever changed that?????? Just my .02

Re: Goodbye DMB (granny_dmb41)

did someone forget about vietnam? a lot of great music came out just because of that war but it was cool then, dave is just voicing his opinion, so obviously you are a bush fan and i feel sorry for you, but i think your decision is a little drastic, plus why didnt you just keep it to yourself? you want more people to feel the way that you do also, kinda like dave? hes just trying to get the word out just like yourself.

goodbye

Re: Goodbye DMB (Steelbreeze76)

Here is Trippindoogies first response; I'm sure Dave will pull out of the "Vote For Change Tour" becuase of Mr. WarLover:

Re: Goodbye DMB (trippindoogies)

I want Dave to know. That's it. I don't pretend to have the ability to change even one left leaning DMB fans mind about the way the world works. Like me, I'm sure, their perspective is (hopefully) the result of their individual experience on this planet and nothing I do or say will change that.

Not trying to. I just want Dave to know, that's all. Not that he cares.

Are they sadomasochists or just people with idealogical beliefs that are as shallow as fly spit on hot pavement? They hear the music but never LISTEN, then they're shocked to find out where the artists really stand and insist on raising a stink for being "deceived".

Just stick with the state fair country fuck festivals and you'll be fine.

40. Well, they're just looking for a Jimmy Buffett replacement.
They don't much care about the music, just the scene. And they heard a few years ago that Dave Matthews' shows were a blast, and they thought they'd sign on.

Then they started listening to his lyrics, and they got a little itchy. As soon as Dave announced his feelings about the war with Iraq (he issued a statement against the war, on its eve, and his guitarist, Tim Reynolds, frequently sported a Kucinich shirt), they kinda freaked out, but they still dug the scene.

But Dave's unabashed support of John Kerry has sent them over the edge. And it's sad, and funny, and depressing, and hilarious, at the same time. :-)

Because if I remember correctly, though he doesn't express his political beliefs all that often, he is one. He's gay-tolerant, marijuana-tolerant, lifestyle-tolerant ... when he gives away his money, he gives it to Dems.

Where the F* has this guy been? I read an interview with the Dave Matthews in Rolling Stone at least a year ago where he outright slammed Bush* and said if he thought it would accomplish anything, he'd run for office himself -- but he thought he could accomplish more as a musician and a philanthropist.

when the cognitive dissonance must exceed 120 dB every time they see somebody like DMB play. I'm not even a Dave Matthews fan, really -- I respect any band that manages to stay on top and still do what it wants, though -- but I sure as hell know what the lyrics to his songs say. Same thing with Springsteen fans, or John Cougar Mellencamp fans, or anybody else who follows a band that expresses clearly populist sentiments in its lyrics, but when the band or the musician expresses clearly populist sentiments in his 'real life,' they have a kitten.

62. That's such a great point, nownow.
And it means more, and holds more weight, since it doesn't come from a DMB fan.

Thanks for that!!

Keep sharing the love, sundog!!

We are all sitting
Legs crossed round a fire
My yellow flame she dances
Tequila drinking oh our
Minds will wonder
To wonderous places

So why would you care
To get out of this place
You and me and all our friends
Such a happy human race

45. Yes, it's very, very sad.
It just makes me question why someone like him ever professed to others "I LOVE DAVE!!!"

Why did he go to DMB shows? Why did he scream "Woooohooooooo!!!" every time they launched into "Two Step"? Why did he raise a plastic cup of overpriced, warm-ass draft domestic to "Trippin' Billies"? Why did he join an official DMB Fan Club in the first fucking place?

but this has bothered me since I read the thread yesterday. Are you aware that there are autistic DUers, and that autistics are not "dumbasses?"

47. i think not.
No matter how much I dislike DMB (i know they're all VERY talented musicians, i know i know i know!), I can always appreciate they're political views.

All things French and Canadian? My, my, my...that's just awful. Reminds me of a right wing buddy of mine from school. He has in his AIM profile the quote "Bush/Cheney 04 - Move to France if you don't like it," probably to the well thought out Kerry/Edwards subprofile that my friend created for me.

I don't think that many people care that the DMB are a bunch of liberals, remember what happened with the Dixie Chicks? That kind of publicity will only make them more popular.

53. WTF is up with Spokane?
I always thought I lived in the land of wingnuts and assholes, only to find out that the Holy Liberal Left Coast State of Washington also harbors such fucktwits.

I just don't get it, darlin'. :-)

68. Well VolcanoJen, I live in a little town called Puyallup, which
is as B*sh friendly as Midland, Texas, and has about as many pickup trucks. Lots of freeper types with their "I Support President George W. Bush and our Troops" bumperstickers. Yeccccchhhhh!!!!!

Sometimes I have to go up to Seattle just to reacquaint myself with the fact the Washington is a blue state.

59. interesting.
I'm glad Greg got it out of his system. But anyone who is suprised by this fan base (and if the parties convince people to not support artists who don't agree with them politically then the band will lose record sales, maybe they're big enough to not lose concert dollars, but album sales will decrease) anyone who thinks all DMB fans are liberals wasn't around inthe good old days (did Ijust say that?) when the band was playing crappy clubs and frat houses in Virginia and New England, not to a liberal audience, but to frat boys. UVA ain't that liberal of a place, you know?

60. I mean, honestly.
How many other bands can you name who scored a Top 10 single that involved European Colonialism in Africa (Don't Drink The Water)???

I've been a fan of the band for many years, but still not early enough to have caught the UVA shows... and their liberal songwriting slant and super-laid-back fanbase endeared them to me then, and now.

Greg Duggan is a trendy fundie jerktwit. It's just the way it is, but it's still fun to point and laugh at him. :-)

63. I had a friend do the same thing with me last night
I knew my friend is Republican (althought he says he's independent - whatever) and he knows I'm a Democrat. We usually don't talk about politics so that we can stay friends (and sometimes more). I also know that he's a fan of James Taylor and I remember a couple of years ago there was a concert he missed and he was bummed out about it.

So I IM'd him the schedule for the Vote For Change concerts since he lives in PA. Here it is for you swing staters (at least some of the swing states that is) in case you haven't seen it yet:

http://www.moveonpac.org/vfc/schedule.html

Now I really didn't think this was a problem. I mean, I don't boycott Arnold Schwarzenegger movies because he's Republican. But my friend went BALLISTIC!!! This certainly isn't the first time that concerts have taken place in association with an election and I'm sure it won't be the last. Since when do you have to agree with every single thing that an artist says or thinks in order to appreciate their work?

69. He just chanted the "shut up and sing" diatribe ....
to which I responded with my "Celebs have freedom of speech just like you and me". He was just sincerely irritated that SO MANY bands had joined together in this cause. It is pretty impressive when you look at the line up. The thing is, few of these artists have been silent about their political beliefs in the past. Either they've spoken their mind outright, or they've spoken their beliefs through their lyrics. I mean, did he really think James Taylor was a Republican?

It's all blown over though and he's talking to me again.

66. Can you really blame this guy, though?
I mean, he's from SPOKANE, for cryin' out loud! That has got to be a pretty brutal punishment for his myriad sins of being a repuke. Spokane ranks up there with Boise for being a drab, arid shithole of a city in the otherwise beautiful Pacific Northwest. Give him some sympathy, man. He needs it.

BTW, not a huge DMB fan, but only because I've never really listened to their music. His cover of 'All Along The Watchtower' was intense, though.
