15. 23 here... funny that ALL of the "interpretations" except for zero...
imply that you might be (or are if you score anything higher) libertarian, even though the perfect score is 160.... whatever.

And this I like... the author justifies his belief that there are many more libertarians than one would think with this graph:

quote:
"I begin with a simple scatter diagram of the first 2662 test-takers and their scores. No clear pattern emerges at first glance, except perhaps that there is an unusual clustering at the maximum score of 160."

Huh?

18. I got a 59, but the test was whack
Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 07:37 PM by Cats Against Frist
There are too many qualifiers for me to answer most of the questions. There's a gray area between our huge federal government, and "all government is inherently evil." I realize they scaled it back, but some of the questions, I was uncomfortable with -- this was definitely one of those right-leaning libertarian tests, as opposed to left-leaning, THOUGH, they did ask the question about "whether all government is to protect a parasitic, ruling elite," which I sort of agree with, but not ALL government, you know.

I could see myself voting more libertarian, on the test, if I had a little place to write out my "ifs..." after the question. First and foremost, "if I lived in fantasyland," in which case, I would have gotten a 160 on the test.

*****edited to add: Actually, I wouldn't have gotten a perfect score, because only a totally insane person would vote to privitize the courts and police, and the roads.

36. Right
And have have kind of a quasi-Libertarian stance. It takes me like a whole page to explain my political "place" on the spectrum, but it does seem fitting that I have a higher score than most people, on the test.

Here's the short version.

I believe in the Marxist Feminist Critique.
But, I don't believe, all the time that more government is the answer.

I like states' rights.
But I don't see how we could do "free states" at this point, because a lot of our infrastructure, technology, distribution, etc. work on a national scale.

But do believe that government enables the rich, as much as the poor.
And that we're all stupid slobs, and yes, it is very much our own fault the rich have so goddamn much money.

But, it's their fault, too, for being greedy bastards.

And I don't believe in welfare.
Except for people who really need it, and I do believe that the government is the only agency that can fairly dole it out.

I like the idea of federal sales tax and flat taxes on income (not capital gains or corporate) because I feel like it would make consumers responsible for their largesse. But that it shouldn't cover food or housing. And that people living in poverty shouldn't have to pay any taxes, at all.

I guess I believe in anarcho-syndicalism.
But I know it's a friggin' pipe dream.

I like a lot of Libertarian ideas.
But unless you have a time machine, and everyone started off equally, they don't make a lot of fucking sense.

One thing that we can all agree upon, however. The GOP is rotten and sucks to the core, and if you study classical liberalism and the Constiution, they are just as "big government" as they accuse any other faction of being. And their "social engineering" is over the top.

That's all I have to say. But I'm not surprised I scored a little higher.

Yes: #21-23, #25-30, a few others...

Most of them were "No".. And fairly ridiculous, to boot.

I also think questions like "Should taxes be cut" are too broad. I don't have a problem with taxes per se, I just have a problem with where they're going. If we pared down the military-industrial complex to a reasonable size (good luck) and ended the drug war/prison boondoggle, we wouldn't need to pay so much in taxes.

I guess I'm a "soft-core" libertarian.. I think governmnet has a place, it's just not in people's bedrooms or nervous systems.

Much more a social libertarian than an economic one. I could pretty much tell where it was going from the start --

Ayn Rand was one scary gal --- and Alan Greenspan was an early follower. Once he got The Power, he changed his tune.

70. No. I'm not joking. I got seven.
This test's biggest problem is that it's binary. Either you AGREE WITH LEGALIZING ALL DRUGS including crack, smack, hillbilly heroin and Thunderbird  or you THINK ALL DRUGS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL (including beer, cigarettes, coffee, nasal spray...) AND EVERYONE WHO DOES DRUGS SHOULD BE TAKEN OUT BACK AND SHOT. Hell of a choice.

The test's author seems to believe that government has no purpose whatsoever, which is bogus on its face. Privatizing the cops? We do that; there are private security companies all over the place. But if Target's rent-a-cop is on duty, mine isn't, and someone walks into the Home Depot with a gun, watch how quickly the Target rent-a-cop will come over. We have private fire companies too: Red Adair ran one, another is Boots and Coots. They exist because the kind of fire they fight--oil wells--is too dangerous and specialized to ask a regular fire department to handle. Anyone want to guess what would happen if the house next door to Red Adair's fire shop caught fire? They'd probably fight it, but the homeowner would definitely get a bill. And private armies have already been tried, so don't ask.

Private roads would be worse.

Said the test, I have some libertarian leanings. I think many people do. In my case, I believe the Sodomy Law should be revoked. Pot should be legalized as soon as we can develop a reliable test that shows marijuana intoxication, not just the presence of cannabinoid metabolites. (This has to be done because enforcing a law against Driving While Stoned is impossible if smoking dope is legal. Nowadays, because weed is illegal, if someone's caught Driving Stupid with Cannabinoid Metabolites In His Piss, you can convict him of Driving While Stoned.) This doesn't mean people should be free to Fuck Sheep and Shove Heroin.

85. Same about the 7 as the 4....

I imagine most people on DU here agree with:
Legalize pot
Any sex legal
Freedom of Expression legal
No National Service
No Draft
Lower military budget
USA intervenes too much
US refuses to pay for defense of allies that are rich
US should try to avoid civilian targets
Bombing civilians in an enemy country = murder (THREE POINTS)

That's a 12.

You only picked 7? :/

86. The way the questions were written, I had to
It wasn't "legalize pot" it was "legalize all drugs." I don't think crack should be illegal.

And they didn't seem to want to "try" to avoid civilian targets, they seemed to want to shoot the troop if he shot up a civilian target even if the ordinance accidentally hit the thing. There are, and always will be, short rounds.

62. be proud
the hip thing to be nowadays is socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

Buck the trend and be proud to be an old Democrat like Dick Gephardt, when all too many democrats are becoming more conservative on economic issues.

Welfare reform? Bullshit.

Vouchers? Bullshit.

Tax cuts to spur the economy? Bullshit.

It's time to return to the FDR roots of the Democratic Party which was a party predicated on helping the little people instead of the rich and powerful.

 I must disagree with some when they say Dick and Lieberman are the same or simliar. Gephardt fan all the way, heck would have liked him for VP even, but I like Edwards for it too.

64. Lieberman gets a bad rap on here
People have him pegged as some kind of neocon who would cut social services if elected or whatever.

While Joe is a hawk, he spent years as Connecticut's attorney general protecting the environment and going after companies gouging their customers. He also had the most progressive tax plan as well as a fine health care plan. He is a very pious person, that's true, but he is also a very moral person and fine Democrat.

Dick Gephardt is a fine Democrat too, but that goes without saying. He earned my primary vote with his votes against NAFTA and PNTR China.

69. hey cool
Yeah I do think Joe gets a bad rap but Gep more so. Gephardt in fact is my earliest political hero and memory, he reminds me of my grandparents. A traditional guy in a new world who still believes in the new deal mentality and is a little moderate on social issues but is a tolerant person, like his daughter, that was classy.

Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 07:53 AM by JohnKleeb
. NM I do see why its kind of sad but I personally am more of an economic liberal and more of a social moderate-liberal, like I dont like abortion and want it kept to a min though I will march for women's rights, I oppose the DP on religious grounds, I dont really like drug use though I wouldnt mind legalizing pot, now economically, I believe in the Wagner Act, that Taft-Hartley should be overturned, that welfare reform is a bunch of nonsense, that blue collar workers are what has made America the way it is etc.

84. Wait just a sec about FOUR.
I imagine most people on DU here agree with:
Legalize pot
Any sex legal
Freedom of Expression legal
No National Service
No Draft
Lower military budget
USA intervenes too much
US refuses to pay for defense of allies that are rich
US should try to avoid civilian targets
Bombing civilians in an enemy country = murder (THREE POINTS)

That's a 12.

You really only picked FOUR of those?!

97. I am not for all of those either.
I support these:

legalize pot
any sex legal
freedom of expression legal
no national service
no draft
USA intervenes too much
USA refuses to pay for defense of allies that are rich(somewhat agree)
US should try to avoid civilian targets

I disagree that we need a lower military budget, and I disagree that bombing civilians in an enemy country = murder. While this war was a mistake and while we have killed innocent Iraqis, most of them were not murderered. The ones that died in the initial Shock and Awe bombings were not targeted by U.S. troops.

Murder is the illegal killing of someone with malice afterthought. While these killings are terribly tragic they are not illegal nor were most of them done wtih malice afterthought.

66. 16... This test is BS
I would characterize myself as a libertarian-socialist, which is completely different from these right-wing Libertarians who are basically masquerading as Republicans.

These crazy libertarians want to abolish the post office, abolish government schools, and throw old people out of nursing homes and into the streets because they think it is such a burden on them to pay to keep our elderly in nursing homes under Medicaid.

They also feel that education is not a right but a privilege.

These people are crazy right-wingers and they mask their evil agenda with talk of being antiwar and against the draft.

Don't bite.

You can still be anti-war and anti-draft without being a Libertarian. Most people who go to the Libertarian conventions are kids still living in their parents' basements reading Ayn Rand and talking about anarcho-capitalism and dreaming abot a futuristic feudalistic society in which they can imprison all of us and work us like dogs for 50 cents an hour because they would have abolished the minimum wage too.

Fuck em. Nuff said.

and the test is bullshit.

There are more different kinds of libertarians than socialists, and the ones who go so far as privatising the police and courts are the wacko fringe.

Hey, SOMEBODY'S got to run the show, and it ain't gonna be libertarians.
