DU Runners - a few questions, if I may.
I recently started running again after a break of, oh... about 20 years. I started running a mile and I've increased that by a half mile every couple of days.

Do I get more of the benefits of running if I keep increasing the distance, or would it be better to pick up my pace? Should I be running every day, or every other day? I'd appreciate any hints or tips you could offer.

Thanks! :hi:

1. Try intervals once a week

1. Go to a track.

2. Run one lap as fast as you can.

3. Run the next one at a very slow jog.

4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 over and over (it's okay to walk the jog lap sometimes)

This is a great way to improve your distance speed.

2. If you increase your pace you will be able to run faster and faster
If you increase you distance you will be able to run longer and longer.

Do you want to run faster, or do you want to run longer?

4. I'm mainly trying to get into shape.
I guess I'm going for stamina, so I'll keep increasing the distance. Thanks!

3. Though you didn't ask, get the best pair of running shoes you can afford
Get them at a specialty running store, and ASK for advice. I ruined my feet last spring running too often in old, lousy sneakers (unemployed at the time). My feet get sore now from 9 holes of golf. :(

5. You're increasing your volume too quickly. >
As much as you may be getting back into it, resist the urge to do too much. A 10% weekly increase in mileage will help keep you injury-free.

Agree with the posters who suggest adding in some fartlek and/or speed work.
