It was on June 12 1970. You can google it if you want. The excerpts from his bio are pretty funny. His Pirates were playing the Padres and he didn't know he was pitching until his girlfriend read it in the paper but by then it was too late. He describes how sometimes the ball looked big and sometimes small and that he chewed his gum until it was powder. He dove out of the way of balls that weren't even close and opposing batters sensed something was wild about him. He said he was okay as long as he was throwing fastballs. The catcher knew something was up when Ellis mentioned in the 6th that that he just realized he had a no-no (he meant no-hitter) going.

I sure would like to see a tape of that game on ESPN.

1. Yup.
Understandably, he walked 8 batters.

You can find the box score at http://www.retrosheet.org

4. Oh, his best hit batsmen story....
The Pirates were playing the Big Red Machine(TM) in '74, and they were all quaking in their boots. Ellis decided to teach them a lesson.

Leading off the game, he hit Pete Rose. Then he hit Joe Morgan. Then he hit Dan Driessen. He tried to hit Tony Perez, but Perez dodged them all and walked.

He tried to hit Johnny Bench twice. Three hit batsmen, a walk, and two balls on Bench... the Pirates manager took him out of the game.

The Bucs weren't afraid anymore.

3. Yes, they generally leave that story out of the DARE curriculum

They would have you believe that everyone who's ever taken acid is a drooling imbecile.

Classic story, for sure... "Ummm. Honey.. It says here you're supposed to pitch today"
