Some questions about stabbing deaths

43 times? Was that really necessary? Wouldn't say 28 have done it? 12 even?

On my way to work the local news on NPR this cheery little story was featured and I was wondering why 43? At some point they had to be more than certain that they had achieved their goal. Ghastly!

WYTHEVILLE - A 15-year-old girl testified yesterday that a teenage girlfriend's plot to stab her mother to death sounded "silly," so she decided not to tell Wythe County authorities about it - until searchers found the mother's body face down in a backyard grave.

Vaughne Roxanne Thomas, 42, of Max Meadows was found buried behind her house on May 31. Wythe prosecutors allege Thomas' daughter, Nakisha Waddell, then 14, stabbed her mother 43 times in the face, neck, shoulder and back, doused her in alcohol, oil and nail polish remover in a frantic but failed effort to burn her, and finally buried her charred body in a shallow grave beneath a pile of firewood.

Waddell's accomplice, according to prosecutors, was Anastasia Belcher, then 15. Prosecutors hope to try both as adults.
