Keyes to 'hang hat' in Calumet City apartment.
http://www.suntimes.com/output/elect/cst-nws-sside11.html

----"The newly minted Republican nominee for U.S. Senate said Tuesday he has not seen the apartment yet, but picked the area because it is "a place that would be pretty much like the place that I would have grown up in, I think, if I had have grown up here."

Keyes said his Calumet City digs are only temporary, but he hopes to use the experience to learn more about Illinois. He said he will discuss the family's permanent residence with his wife, Jocelyn."---

Here's some background on the place that we locals refer to as "Cal City". I say local because I live a couple of towns over, perhaps 5 miles away. Back in the day, Cal City was quite notorious for it's famous sin-strip. It's become more gentrified in recent years.

4. The article in the Sun-Times says...
The 500 block of Garfield and posted a picture of the 2 flat.

It's brown brick with a white wrap-around porch.

Yeah, right. Once Obama hands him his ass in November, he'll be gone.

3. How sad that a candidate for Senate has to learn about the state
3 months before the election.

5. I wonder what the terms of his lease are.
Month to month, I would imagine. Sen. Clinton bought a million-dollar home in Westchester Co.

10. I believe that they are.
Cal City used to be a real rough place at one time. Nowadays it's best known as the location of River Oak Mall. Jake and Elwood would be mortified.

11. The Orphanage was in Cal City...I remember the end of movie.
Why they were paying taxes on a church-owned building is beyond me, but who needs reality? :D

and the scene where J & E visit the Penguin was on.

I have to say, it was one of the most visually interesting scenes in a movie ever. The way the light hits the stairs going up to her office. The way that Jake tumbles down the stairs while still in the school desk. And who can forget how the Penguin crosses her arms and slides back into the office as the door mysteriously closes.

Classic stuff.

14. Taxes on the orphanage.
I'm embarrassed to say how many times I saw the movie before I noticed that little plot hole. Late at night, watching it for the who-knows-how-many time with friends, it struck me.

"Taxes? On an orphanage? A CHURCH orphanage?!"

"Aw, crap! The movie's RUINED for me!!"

Not that that's stopped me from watching it several more times (and buying it again on DVD), mind you.

7. I used to live in that area of the country.
I remember driving through Whiting and smelling the Lever Bros plant.
Very industrial area, or at least it was when I was in that area 20+ years ago.

15. Calumet City
was where the Ray Charles character in the "Blues Brothers" had his shop. I realize this has nothing to do with anything but the movie was on last night and I heard it mentioned.

17. ha ha
...unfortunately, all of the fun places, like the Zig Zag, are now closed. They were forced out by the same "clean up Cal City" mayor who is now in federal prison.

All of that was bulldozed, and now there a bunch of no-fun churches there.

Incidentally, Keyes is living one block away from where 'the strip' used to be.

18. Cal City mayor was real defensive yesterday on Roe Conn
She was saying that they have cleaned up the town, etc. Cal City of old exists now in only in my imagination, with lingerie shows and late-night bars.

21. the strip
What's funny is that area sucks more now that they've 'cleaned it up'.

Who is going to cause trouble when there are mobsters and people on motorcycles hanging around?

22. Lol
Maybe when he gets jacked he can tell them that he is running for Senate and that he urges them to stop acting immorally and repent. He has no business being in that neighborhood. They won't vote for him anyway.
