Let's talk World Music for a sec!
I've been listening to a ton of Fela Kuti lately. Its jazz in the most wonderful way - but its world as well. VERY political and danceable as a motherfucker - to quote Miles!

What are you into? Give me some suggestions you learned and cultured DU freaks!

7. also...
She does a great cover of the great Victor Tsoi's Kukushka.

Which reminds me, for the music of the late Victor Tsoi, check out Kino.

Another old Russian rock band worth checking out is DDT.

4. I like the Putumoya (spelling?) cds
I don't know that much about world music overall, but I have a few of those cds and I really like them. I have mostly caribbean music, and am a reggae fan.

6. Try Amina
She's got a great voice, very cool blend of techno and middle-eastern sound...

9. i like fela too...
I was lucky to see him twice over the years...Simply awesome each time, I counted at least 18 band members, and if you weren't dancing then you had to have been dead...

I like soukous a lot, especially the older style by guys like Franco and Tabu Ley...I like the bands with a brass section and real live drummers! Too much of the nowaday stuff relies on synthesizers and drum machines and it just isn't the same...

On a different tangent I like the Swedish-finnish band Hedningara, sort of "techno-folk" you can mosh to! Just Swedish traditional folk musicians with three Finnish woman singers ala Varttina (who I also like) gone "heavy"...

11. I have a couple Värttinä albums - I love them. They have this song
Maamo of their Aitara album - it is so haunting and is enjoyable earworm material!

Geoffrey Oryema... I love African artists... I don't even know what to call their music, but it's beautiful!

Oh and if you dig folk music try La Bottine Soirante. :)

12. Oh yeah, Fela
Didn't we talk about him on another thread? He's one of my all time favorites. Kick ass.
I don't listen to a lot of world music unless it's traditional. I like the nonesuch recordings of traditional songs from Africa. They were re-released on CD last year.
