TOKYO -- Seven resort hotels in central Japan could be in hot water if it turns out they used plain-old tap water in baths that were advertised as natural hot springs.
A government spokesman said authorities raided the hotels about 70 miles northwest of Tokyo after a newspaper reported the claims of a whistleblower.
Officials are expected to later question the operators of the remaining 49 hotels and inns in the area.
Hot springs are big business in Japan, where soaking in scalding water is a national obsession. The hot springs in Ikaho draw nearly 2 million visitors annually.
Earlier this year, several inns acknowledged using coloring agents after their springs stopped producing naturally milky water.
