1. Didn't like the debate or drama kids in high school
They didn't draw anyone very interesting--sort of the overachiever and look-at-me groups went there. They were nice enough, but everyone's your pal in high school anyway.

5. Where did you go to high school?
"everyone's pals anyway" - NOT! More cliques than Ru Paul's shoes!

The only really cliquey period I recall was in junior high--in my high school you could make friends with everyone pretty easily. We did have about 2,000 kids, so it wasn't a tiny school.

2. I was in "Debate Club," but we never went to any meets.
We just sorta, you know... smoked dope.

4. Damn, where the hell was that club in my school?
Our auto club smoked the most dope, so I used to hang out with a few of those kids. The dullest parties I've been to were parties that involved a lot of our debate and drama kids. The parents were there, the piano had that obligatory photo of some guy in the army, and there were crackers and cheese or some nonsense like that. We played shitty party games and I tried to swallow my own tongue. Nice kids, though. :D

7. Those are lame debate and drama parties.
Debate for me? Drugs.
Drama? Sex.
Philosophy club? Sex, drugs, rock & roll -- and a wee bit o' Aristotle thrown in.
Ski club? Drugs.
Hanging out at Grant's house? Drugs (this is true of ANYONE named "Grant").
Hanging with the soccer players? Drugs (this is true of ALL HS soccer players).

All of the above featured copious amounts of alcohol.

Ah, the myriad joys of a Catholic education....

3. I Was A Lincoln-Douglas Champion!!
Circa 1983, but champion, nonetheless.

I look back on my L-D days with fondness, and found my experience in the National Forensic League to be more valuable than practically anything I learned in college.

12. I was a Lincoln-Douglas runner up!
then again, I live in a small state, so that's not so big a deal. Never qualified for nats.

Nothing wins like eastern philosophy. Nobody understood it, even the judges.

9. I kicked ass on "Resolved: That Civil Disobedience is Morally Justified."
Both sides... my ace-in-hole-argument was Womens' Suffrage.

Like the Spanish Inquisition, NOBODY expects Womens' Suffrage in a debate topic designed for the discussion of the civil rights movement of the 1960s!

And that's why I kicked ass, but I do have my wonderful debate teacher to thank for helping me perfect my arguments. ;-)

What a cool thread... I haven't thought about debate team for years. :D
