2. I also think its a monumental waste of time.
It takes valuable ink away from the real sport: Pro Football

GO STILLERS!

4. I don't care.
If it wasn't for people posting about it here, I wouldn't even have known they had begun.

I used to care slighty, when it was about amateur sport, but there's something about watching Michael Jordan and his millionaire buddies kick the ass of the Swaziland basketball team that's so...unsatisfying, somehow.

8. Yep, that's what ruined it for me too.
But there could be hope - was it Italy that creamed their pampered asses in the exhibition games? Somebody did. So it could happen during the real games too.

Now we get to field all-star teams in basketball and hockey, WTF? That's not fair, and that's not in the spirit of the Olympics.

5. Fuck the Olympics!
Why are we even talking about it in this ONE thread? That's just how much I DON'T care about the Olympics.

My best friend is all freaking out over it and I can't stand it. We're gonna not see each other for a few weeks until this blows over because I just cannot go there with her on this.

Olympic coverage on television used to be pretty good, and was never better than when they did a commercial-free broadcast on 3 cable stations (you paid for it, and they had different events on each of the 3 stations). They lost money, unfortunately. Now, the coverage is absolutely terrible. All these human interest stories about the athletes, commentators who absolutely cannot shut up, and far too little competition. I won't watch even 5 minutes of it this year.

14. I think since they are now every two years because the winter and summer
rotate it has taken the specialness and rarity out of it.

They are every other year so it makes it seem so much more common.

I was only 11 years old but the 1980 US Hockey team was awesome. We are always the big kid on the block now and I tend to root for the underdog which was what made that so great.

There also used to be the communist countries vs. free countries kind of competition that seemed to add something.

7. I guess I'm happy they exist
but the last time I ever wanted to watch them was in 1972 when I was 11. Strange, that was the Munich Olympics, and one day it just suddenly turned into horror.

10. I would be more interested if it was covered differently here in the US
All we'll get to see are events where Americans are involved. I am also dreading the usual flag waving and shouts of USA USA USA. Blame it on the networks. I realize they spent a ton of money to buy the rights to telecast and have to sell commercial space to pay for it but it won't be very interesting for me. I'll watch some, but not much.

11. I would love to watch the fencing, the judo, the taekwondo, the
equestrian competitions, but how likely is any of that? Instead we'll be treated to soap operas about how much some gymnast went through to get here, about some runner's close relative suffering with cancer, about a swimmer who has a cute kid with some disability. Gahhhh! At least the Jamaican bobsled team were fun! This bathos is nauseating.

she's russian and says after the last Olympic games, she'll watch only broadcasts from countries other than the US. She hates all the myopic flag waving which she says distracts from the games.

16. Used to love the Olympics but.................
the last few times, it has been so jammed full of advertisements that I cannot bear to sit through them to get to the rare sports event. And they do too many short pieces and sound bite interviews, and not enough actual event coverage. What a waste.

Besides............LOOK, over there, it's an athlete who said something trite! Pay no attention to this man in the chimpanzee suit!

18. No you're not the only one.
I can't stand the Olympics. I will admit that I really got into the US hockey team winning in 1980; that was special. But that's it. Beyond that, I know nothing about the Olympics, and as long as I'm never on Jeopardy with the Olympics as a category, I couldn't care less about my ignorance of them.

The broadcast et al gets more sickening every year. Apparently NBC is going to be covering them during the day, because I just found out that my soaps aren't going to be on during that time. Oh well, at least I'll have a little more time on my hands.

24. Nope. I don't give a crap either.
Watching the Olympics just reminds me how fat I am. And that makes me want to go exercise. But then I don't go, and then I feel bad all over again. The Olympics aren't good for my psychology.

26. Couldn't give a shit
Now that it's all steroid-laden moron idiots and professional sports players, it's boring as hell and a bunch of hyped fucking bullshit; and communities struggle like shit to be able to host an Olympics because of the "revenue" they bring in, and utterly and totaly fail to learn from history and realize that after the games are done, the community is stuck with a shitload of arenas and ski places or whatever the hell they had to build, and a few thousand idiot moron workers who moved into the community just to help build all the shit they needed for the games, but who they don't need any more.

Goddamned waste of time, and goddamned waste of money.

When I was a kid, they seemed cool in the extreme and I loved watching them, especially the winter games.

Now it's all bullshit.

28. I was over in NYC, hoping that the city wouldn't try to get an Olympics
But, by God, they are indeed trying.

Though I have to say that NYC is one of the few places that could likely survive the excess of an olympics, even if they do have to construct some new places to do some of the sports. The city already has space for hundreds of thousands of tourists at any time, has an excellent public transportation system, and plenty of spaces in which to play games.

I can watch a few minutes here and there of womens' gymnastics and figure skating (womens' and pairs), but that's about it. I just don't get the people who sit glued to the tv the whole time the Olympics are on no matter what the event is. :boring:
