any DU hip hop fans out there?
out of all of us, there's got to be at least one of you who can get down with me. i'm talkin about the real shit too, the originals and the greats, someone who knows the four elements. are there any more than just casual hip hop fans out there? do you know what the breaks are?

i can't be all alone, can i?

3. I doubt you'll find too many DUers who are into hip hop....
Most are old fogeys who still cream over Bruce Springsteen.

However, I do know a few rabid hip hop fans; my DUer friend Chavezspeaksthetruth is one.

I'm not a fan of mainstream hip hop myself, I like El-P, the Coup, old Public Enemy, Vast Aire, New Kingdom, Vadim...more underground/political shit like that.

Old school hip hop? Like Spoonie Gee? I guess it's better than country and western.....

5. yeah thats what i'm saying!
PE, the Coup, El-P (the whole def jux crew for that matter), those that carry on with the traditions of the genre's forefathers.

i feel better now

as far as old school goes, i'm talking eric b and rakim, the J.U.I.C.E. crew, boogie down productions, the native tongues crew, zulu nation, etc. etc.

9. New Kingdom, I think, were unjustly ignored....
Put out a great album in 95, then disappeared.

I'll take Eric B and Rakim over Springsteen any god damn day of the week, too.

8. It's true there aren't many of us...
but as my handle suggests, I love da shit.

I love all hiphop. Though I do have a problem with some of the role models the modern stuff provides for young inner-city kids, I just cannot deny the sheer brilliance of just about all of the music. There's very little of I don't like and can't get down with for the BEATS at LEAST!!

My short list of favs is too long to post here. But I'm totally diggin on the Twista/Kanye West tip these days. Kudos for starting the thread. They tend to sink like a rock cuz there are so few DUers who have a profound appreciation for the music. But lots are open to it so it's up to us to school them.

12. kanye is bringin it back
i love what kanye is doing, making people shake their asses but he's puttin some knowledge into it...man's a genius, he's taking back to what hip hop is supposed to be

a movement, a lifestyle, a feeling

more than just music

20. Just kickin it
ol' school style. Not buyin' into the bling shimmer ice flava that's really been dominating hiphop these days. He some how charts new territory without going way way out the way Andre 3000 does. Not that I'm knockin OutKast...I'm as big a fan as any. But Kanye is so fresh and positve while simplistic with an ol' school flava that is so juicy. Like you said, it's all VERY dancable which is a plus.

I've also been re-diggin on Erykah Badu's catalog these days. I'm totally in love with her in a way I never was. There's an artist who brought the knowledge, the musicality, the beats and, IMHO, she did get the props she deserves because she's a woman.

13. business as usual
is one of my favorites

and yeah you're right about the twinkle in the eye thing...i'm only 19...

i grew up in a small town where everyone loved dave matthews band, but im thankful for that, it forced me as a young kid to actively look outside of that, and find the good stuff

that, and the fact that my older brother bought me a tribe called quest album when i was 6

22. I was into that Aesop Rock
but his stuff got a little too...how do I say...thick for me.

I got what he was goin' for but he packs so much into one song. He strikes me as the kind of artist who is much better live than on recording. He might even drop some serious knowledge at a poetry type hiphop thang...
