An Aurora woman who allowed a 12-year-old neighbor to back up her car Tuesday night was badly hurt when she was slammed against her trailer after the underage driver hit the gas instead of the brakes.
"She told me she was 15 years old," said 52-year-old Barbara Smith, interviewed by phone from Provena Mercy Center, where she was hospitalized after the accident. "And she reversed the car beautifully. But then she hit the gas line instead of the brake."
Smith was standing in front of her trailer, located at 43A Margarets Lane in the west suburban trailer park, when her 12-year-old neighbor backed up her car at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, said Undersheriff Mike Anderson of the Kane County sheriff's office, which investigated the incident.
The 12-year-old girl, who lives in a nearby trailer, backed up the 2004 Saturn straight into Smith, pinning her between car and trailer, Anderson said. The driver also hit a 12-year-old boy, also a resident of the Margarets Lane park, who was standing near Smith, Anderson said.
The young boy suffered minor injuries, while Smith was rushed to the hospital for at least three broken bones and a broken leg, Smith said.
"I can't walk," Smith said. "I'm completely smashed."
