Can anyone give me an idea what I should expect to pay
per square yard for decent carpeting. I don't want anything fancy, but I do want it to hold up.
I have checked on line, but having trouble locating pricing.
We are going shopping tonight and I want some idea what we are looking at before we are attacked by sales people.
Thanks!

1. To give you some comparison...
For our main flooring in our house we payed I think $3.75 per square foot. This was medium level carpet.

For our basement we got carpeting that cost $1.50 per square foot.

I'd say between $3-4 a square foot for a mid range reasonable carpet is what you are looking at.

Also, these were including installation prices.

2. We paid 4.45/sq foot with padding, but no disposal.
That latter is a key piece.

Mr. Pcat's ex took an exacto to the carpet and cut it out years before I met him. They ended up painting the floor for a few years and using area rugs.

When we decided to put carpet back in that room, the carpet was disposed of. That meant we paid $512 for 115 square feet of carpet, padding and installation. (Our vendor used square feet, not yards, by our receipt.) Disposal of the old stuff would have cost us an additional $300 or so.

Good luck!

Pcat (have you considered laminate flooring? It's very nice, easy maintenance, and we're finding its improving our allergies to not have carpet around.)

4. We pulled up the old carpet & pad two weeks ago.
It took over 6 hours to pull all the tacks & staples out of the floor. Oh well, at least we don't have to pay for that.

3. thanks for the info
I need to do this as well to my condo's 2nd floor which is about 375 sq ft. The first floor is all hardwood which is real nice looking but required maintenance with 2 black cats always wrestling on it. :)

The finished basement was carpeted for only $110. No padding and I laid it myself.
