Got home and found about 1,700 spam messages in my inbox -- after last checking my e-mail 3 hours ago. Yep, that can only mean one thing -- the MailScanner service (program) I use on the mail server for my small hosting biz is down.

So I telnet (ssh) in to the server and restart the service. Then I check the service status and even though it restarted OK it was still listed as down. Well, it's time to upgrade to the newest version anyway so...

I wget the rpm I need, tarball the old configs and rpm -e the old rpm and lo and behold -- the rpm database is corrupted. Cheney!

Well, I rpm --rebuilddb to rebuild the rpm database which appears to succeed so I can finally rpm --Uvh the new rpm. 10 minutes later and I can now start the MailScanner service.

Yay! E-Mail is now being cheerfully tagged as spam by SpamAssassin and I think everything is just peachy keen.

Cheney! Now the procmail recipes I use to route messages tagged as spam or viruses aren't working and all that spam is still filling up my inbox, only now it helpfully says {Spam?} or {Virus?} in the subject line.

Well, I check the X headers on the e-mail and sure enough, the X header line that the MailScanner is using is different in this version, so I edit /etc/procmailrc and a few .procmailrc files in some of my users' home directories and finally everything is back to normal.

I get about one spam a week in my inbox, about 400 in my SPAM folders.
