Something is bugging me.
I keep thinking back a couple of months. I know that I shouldn't be doing this. But, I had this fundraising job for about six weeks that I got fired from. THe day I got fired, I took a call. I talked to this woman while fundraising, I think for People for the American Way. I was trying to negotiate an amount of money that she was willing to donate. She said $25. I asked her if she could do it within a week. She said she wasn't sure. Then I asked her if within the next month was good. She said she is almost sure that she could do it. Though she admitted to a small degree of doubt. But, I thought that it was good enough. So, I went for the naildown. Getting the committment. She seemed to wonder why I wanted a commitment. I thought at the time that she just didn't understand that fundraisere want a committment. But I ended the call after having gone through the steps. A little bit later, one of the supervisors sat me down and had a little talk with me, where he told me that I was fired. But he told me he called that lady back and asked her if she wanted a may-send packet. A packet for people who are not sure they want to committ. She said yes. But he told me in the midst of that conversation that I had an integrity issue. God, I need to sit down and talk with someone about this. It bugs me. After the call, I started second guessing what I did. The thing is, nobody ever accused me of that before and it really got to me.

1. What you really need to stop doing is " worrying " yourself ...
Edited on Fri Aug-13-04 03:25 AM by CarolinaPeridot
That is going to lead to panic attacks . Just don't worry about it anymore . Sometimes we go through things in life where we learn through experience .

Edit starts here : Your boss might have thought you had an integrity issue and another person may not think the same.
our faults and its just life . Second step is to just work on it the best way you can . Remember , life is what you make it .

2. You think that I have an integrity issue?
Edited on Fri Aug-13-04 03:19 AM by coloradodem2004
I know that I made a mistake. I know that I misjudged the situation. Does that mean that I have an integrity issue? I have generally done things on the up and up. I was always concerned about doing what was right and not knowingly screw up. I prided myself on that. And depending on how you look at it, I either took it away from myself or it was taken away from me. That is plenty of reason to worry.

5. No I don't think that you have an integrity issue :)
It all depends on how each person looks at the situation . I don't know ... the way I see it , you did nothing wrong . Maybe she decided right after she talked to you that she wanted to then donate . Its not your fault .

3. Seems like you did everything according to book. What reason was given?
Seems to me that you did everything according to the book. What reason was given for firing? If it was only the vague "integrity issue", then take it up with your boss's boss. You may not get satisfaction if they close ranks, but you may protect the next potential victim of your boss.

Perhaps it would be best to immediately write a letter, and then carry it with you to the office where you ask for an immediate appointment with the boss's boss. If after waiting a while, you don't get it, deliver the letter and get a receipt of delivery. If they refuse to accept delivery, mail it certified.

You are unlikely to get your job back, but you will restore your own good feeling about your integrity and you will help others down the line.

IANAL, I am not a lawyer, but I think you might have a case for wrongful dismissal, and you might be able to win a favorable judgement.

8. Well, the other thing was that he said that....
...there was a work ethic and an attitude issue. I didn't always go for the high ask and do the credit card ask. And I really got sick of the job quickly. He said that we always go for those.

10. Aha! The real reason: you are not a money grubbing squeezer
You have arrived at the real reason. They don't think you squeeze the little old ladies hard enough. Hold your head high.

If you were sick of the job, then perhaps it is just as well to be be rid of it. Wish you quick success in getting a better one.

12. Well, it was a fundraising job.
The company was for profit but got paid per contact. THough they still had quotas. This supervisor was the same guy who had sent people home early for not meeting their quotas. People told me that he was kind of a dick.

4. I can't figure out where you did anything wrong
It's not like you bullied her into signing a contract. I think you're being way too hard on yourself.

6. Two things: that supervisor is incompetent and, in all likelihood...
...possessed of the very integrity issue he accused you of. And, two, it's evident from your second-guessing and self flagellation that you have enough integrity to keep yourself in line along with about ten other people of your choice.

You're okay. :)

7. this one's very easy, so read carefully
People with integrity issues never, ever, ever worry if they have integrity issues.

Do you think Dick Cheney or Karl Rove lie awake at night, wondering if they're doing the right thing?

The very fact that you're worried about it means you don't have an issue with integrity.

14. Indeed. Heinlein was the best modern yarn spinner. . . .
... and he made the reader think.

15. Aye
It's a shame that so many of his fans are right wing or libertarian. I had to leave the Heinlein newsgroup just after 9/11 because of the extreme rightwing slant everything took. Very sad.

17. American Politics is ridiculously bi-polar uni-dimensional
It is a duopoly maintained by the Republicrats and the Demopublicans.

I am by instinct a liberal and rationally a libertarian. So I usually end up somewhere in between.

With a username of Bernardo de La Paz, I figured you'd have a strong libertarian streak. :D Glad to know there's some liberal there, too.

16. My humble thoughts...
he called the lady back. Why? The only reason to do that is to catch you out. If it hadn't been her it would have been the next one, or the one after, until he convinced someone that you had pressured them.

He said you didn't go for the high ask, credit card ask often enough? So who sounds like they lack integrity?

Remember this wasn't a charity, they got commission. They want people to go for the hard sell.

Anyway, I notice no-one else on this tread thinks you lack integrity. Chin up, & forget about them.
