Can someone tell me how to navigate the world without ever buying...
products from businesses who contribute to Republicans? Really. I want to know.

Is there anyone here who can honestly say that they do not buy any products from retailers or companies who contribute to Republicans?

I make an honest effort to avoid the most obvious ones.

But isn't it silly to throw cold water on someone's thread because they like donuts made by a company that contributes to Republicans?

How can I know that the soap, fresh produce, bacon, baby products, clothes I buy are produced only by Democratic party supporters?

I am just wondering...can someone help me navigate through the world of retail so that I remain a Democratic purist?

1. I believe it is impossible.
The best one can do is avoid Republican-owned businesses whenever possible.

I used to believe in trickle down economics.... then I saw a dog.... then the dog saw a firehydrant.... the rest is mystery. :)

I entered some cryptic commands into this Linux box thingy... got some pretty cryptic answers.... but at least they are entertaining....

3. Completely impossible
Republicans are business. You just have to do the best you can and adjust according to new information. At least that's what I try to do. :-)

4. Truly tough one.
Edited on Fri Aug-13-04 10:42 AM by nemdaille
I've been wrestling with this for years. Coors, Carl's Jr., Wal Mart, McDonalds, etc.

I've finally decided I'd have to grow and make my own...everything.

Don't even think of trying to stay pure in the stock market. Damn.

I've settled on avoiding the most obvious and supporting any and all that I can that are truly progressive, Working Assets, The Body Shop, local mom-and-pop shops, that sort of thing.

Oh yeah, and I try to forgive myself for having to "sell out" in a world which I want to see improved but in which I still have to live.

If you find any better answers, please share.

I wish you luck.

7. In a perfect world...
Edited on Fri Aug-13-04 11:00 AM by BannedFromMW
We would have alternatives to the Republican dominated marketplace. It's fairly clear at this point that the world is far from perfect. Here's something that trickles down from the rich and powerful: The sustained belief that being in business = you should be republican. I can't tell you how many people I've heard say are small business owners so obviously they are repub. This is baffling. But it'ss the same people who support tax cuts that favor 1% of Americans at the expense of their local school systems, college tuition, and personal safety (police, fire, first responders.) It's a very troubling characteristic of the 'average' repub.

11. Not living in the US helps...
:-)

When I did, I bought my food at the local health food store where the owner was a friend of mine, and the farmer's market. Pretty much the only "brand name" stuff I bought was shampoo and toothpaste and I could have gone organic there if I wanted.

It's possible in some towns that still have a Main Street and locally owned businesses, but it's damn tough in the suburbs where all you get are chain stores.

Anyway, I don't think you should be made to feel guilty for liking Krispy Kremes. I can't stand them myself though- just thinking about them gives me a toothache.

14. I guess the lesser of evils is buying from poor republicans
instead of rich ones.

That way they can't afford to donate as much to the party.

I prefer to buy from people I know by name and can have a conversation with. Then if I find out they're a repuke, I can try to convert them (or at least convince them not to donate.) There's no talking to Sam Walton though.

Well, Hi Mountain! I made new friends with our local peak - Humphreys. At over 12,000 feet, it's like Rainier's little southwest brother! :loveya:

(Wow, that was my most surreal post of the day)

Here is a pic of the San Francisco Peaks (Humphreys being the highest) overlooking Northern AZ University here in town:
