Windows Updates !!!!
For the last two months I have been getting one update per day. This morning, I've gotten a flood. I must have installed two dozen already. My system runs like shit to begin with so I figure, what the hell. Anyone else seeing this?

If you have Windows Update
turned on then it is probably the 250mb Windows XP2 updates coming in. Good luck.

3. That's what I was afraid of.
I have a illegal copy of XP and was not allowed to download Service Pack I. 250 Mb. It's going to be a long day. Or two.

7. Get X-Teq X-Setup 6.
Set the registration bit. That will allow you to get the SP1 upgrades.

Better idea: Go to Walmart(EWWW!!!, but the best XP prices around...) and BUY a registered OEM version of XP. Do the right thing, even if it is for the wrong companies.

13. XP Corp?
Edited on Sat Aug-14-04 10:07 AM by Nomad559
If you are using XP Corp (Devils Own) you need to change your XP product key before you download SP1 or SP2.

See these two links for Info on how to change your key.

4. I have XP. Got Service pac 1 last week. But that's been it for a while.
Everything is running a-ok, fingers crossed when I typed that. Service Pac 2 is the big one coming out fairly soon. It's HUGE from what I've heard. Oh goody. On dial up, I'll be here all week downloading.

5. Before you do the updates, and after:
Clean out all spyware and viruii and trojans. Run Spybot Search&Destroy AND Ad-Aware. Run the virus killer. Get "The Cleaner" and run that.

Get RegSupreme and KMCS Deluxe System Suite. Run the KMCS Drive Cleaning Utility, according to instructions. Then, run RegSupreme, to clean out slack registry entries. Then, run KMCS Registry Compressor. reboot. Defrag. Then, and only THEN, start the upgrade process with SP2. Start as clean and fresh as you can.

Then, start do the whole process again, once the upgrade is complete, save the spyware and virus jizz.

Then, go find what SP2 has broken and fix it best you can. Note: Things will break. It's inevitable.

I make money doing this stuff. People think there is magic in these hands, when they get their computers back. Really.

8. Giving back a computer...
That has, ostensibly, been burned to the ground by spyware and viruses, malignant registry cruft and bloat, and has never been defragged(Yes, I see that ALL the time), and seeing the look on their faces when it screams...Well, I could ask about any price I wanted. But I don't. I keep my prices fair and manageable.

I get return traffic and referrals that way.

One more thing: If you think I gave all my secrets away, you be one high mofo. You see, then there are my tweaks...;-)

15. Strangely enough
I defraged yesterday, cleaned the registry with Regsesker, and use Avast virus protection. Avast stops everything. I only run Ad-aware once a month now and only find one or two spys(doubleclick or something tracker). So I guess I'm good to go.

10. Add me to the list of people that do this for a living :)
I for one have no problems at all so far with Service Pack 2. No crashes, programs not working, etc.

I'd say you probably are seeing SP2 downloads though.

11. Just download Service Pack 2 which incorporates...
all the previous updates. One easy step. It is something like 250mb to download though.

Good news for you actually. I just found the Microsoft's XP2 Express Installer.

"For those of you how have been waiting for Microsoft to release the express installer for Service Pack 2 because 272MB is too much for you, the wait is now over.

Typical users of the express installer should expect a 80-90MB download, since the express installer only downloads updates for components that your computer has. This is a more reasonable size for dial-up users, and others who can't spare the bandwidth.

There is no difference in the files that are downloaded between this version and the full network install, except that the network install will contain content that your computer probably will not use. Also, it should be noted that you cannot use the express installer to create slipstream installs."
