But we usually have to answer with one, so, either which one is the most % or the one you like the most.

12. Norwegian + Swedish
Edited on Sat Aug-14-04 07:40 PM by berry
note to Salin--I always found Swedish to be the really sing-song language, but now that I think of it...

on edit--after reading what was wanted, I still have to admit there is nothing else to choose from for me--the result of recent immigration and fairly tight immigrant community. Of course, if one goes back far enough, it's pretty clear we're all out of Africa.

27. I was sorta
kidding about the sing-song tones - don't have that quality, nor does my Norwegian mother (nor my cousins)... at least not to my ear. I was refering to the US stereotype of Minnesotan norwegians speaking English with a very exagerated sing-song lilt.

Sadly I don't hear norwegian spoken very often - will have to listen more closely to try to objectively ask myself... "sing song?" :)

38. Ah, now I understand.
It's funny, but I always thought the Minnesotan accent was from Swedish (which really IS sing-song. The "ja" is exactly like the 3rd tone in Mandarin Chinese, which is tonal, of course.). I do know that Norwegians take the brunt of the jokes (maybe because of Prairie Home Companion?), but there are lots of "dumb Swede" jokes out there too. Ah well.

I don't hear Norwegian often myself, as my grandparents are dead and I haven't been to Norway in years. My father was born in Sweden and had an accent all his life, but I only noticed it when other people brought it to my attention. And now that I think about it, it wasn't at all like Minnesotan either. (I'm not from there, but I spent my 4 years of college in MN--enough to find the movie "Fargo" a little grating. They didn't get it quite right.) I'm just blathering now, so I'll stop.

13. I am SO damn American
Edited on Sat Aug-14-04 07:33 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
my mother did years of genealogical work a while back and we don't get out of America until before the early 1700s. Which means we came here before it was a country, just colonies.

When we did trace back across the pond, we are primarily Welsh, with a little French thrown in for good measure (from Nice).

I am married to a man who is half-German, one-quarter South Dakotan and one-quarter New Jerseyite.

How's THAT for a combo deal???

Kidding. But we do have a strong pennypinching streak in our family and we seriously think it is genetic. It skips every other generation. It hit me. But I am trying to overcome it.

I'm more German than Polish, but I look Polish and I'm only a fourth-generation American (dating back to my great-grandparents) on that side of the family. OTOH, the members of my dad's side of the family have been here for at least five generations.

36. American
A minimum of 8 generations from every branch. 8 generations within any other country, provided that they did not marry only or mostly within their original ethnice group, would be consider to have that country's ethnicity. I am not saying that people with fewer generations are not as American as I am. I am just saying why it makes sense for me not to identify with a partculiar ethnice group.
