PALM tech question...WiFi related...Tungsten C
As some may know this weekend was a tax free holiday in Missouri. I took advantage of the situation and bought a Palm Tungsten C to go with the Mac I have had for a year.

It is supposed to be wireless but I cannot seem to access the Internet once I get on the free wireless network at Panera (St Louis Bread Co to St Louisans).

I go throught the WiFi set up and it sees the Panera network, I click on Panera and when I try access a website (democraticunderground.com or nytimes.com) I get an error message "browser error, an error has occurred URL: http://www.nytimes.com/"

I tested a Tungsten C at the Apple Store and Best Buy yesterday and both were able to access democraticunderground.com on their wifi networks.

Thanks for your help!

3. I googled my problem and found the following in
google groups:

Seems someone else has had the same problem but in suburban Chicago, not St Louis and it was at a Panera Bread Co. Here is the response this guy received...

"I do not have a wireless PDA, so I may be totally wet with my
suggestions, but ...

It sounds to me like the Panera's WiFi did not provide a DNS server, so
that your T|C did not have a way to resolve the URL name into an IP
address.

If the T|C WiFi setup software has a way to specify a DNS server
address, you might try using the DNS address of the ISP you use at home "

4. Got an answer to my Palm WiFi question...posting here to help
others who may experience the same problem...

Now this probably applies only at Panera (St Louis Bread) Company stores but who knows, it may also apply at other WiFi spots and connecting with a Palm.

I called the toll free number and talked to a tech guy. He did a few clicks and watched as I tried to log on and voila! I was on and surfing DU. Sadly I did not type this response on my Palm but I'll get there.

I hope this helps others as they try to surf wirelessly.

"I think it's a problem with the way your PDA handles (or doesn't handle)
Javascript. Every time I want to use wifi on my PDA at a Bread Co. I have
to call their support people (800-410-0460) and let them know.  They pull
some levers on their end and then I'm able to get in.  (They have to
manually add your MAC address as being OK to access their network.)  They
say that they're hoping they can get this fixed, but it'll mean going to a
different kind of access point so they're not sure when it'll happen.

Meantime, just call and let them know you want on.  They will do something
that will enable you to go wireless from then on (at that one
location).  You have to call them each time you visit a new Bread Co."
