I am beyond furious with NBC for its olympics coverage
Edited on Sun Aug-15-04 11:22 PM by VelmaD
Particularly the gymnastics. The last thing they covered tonight was the Australian women finishing up and hoping they make it into the team finals but having to wait and see what happens with the final group of countries competing to see if they make it. Well, goddammit, then the fucking idiot announcer says "we'll update you during the late night coverage". This is NOT being shown live. Why do I have to fucking wait til late night coverage to be told what happened? I have to fuckin work tomorrow...I can't stay up all night.

Not only that...you cannot find the women's team preliminary results on their fucking website. I can' teven go online and find out who made it into the team finals and who didn't.

Have I mentioned I HATE NBC?!?!

1. ESPN's got it on theirs...
I'm ticked at NBC, too, for holding those back--whatever happened to "turn away from your sets and mute the volume if you don't want to know"?

B-)

5. Thanks. I'm going to look on ESPN's site
It's not even a matter of "turn your head away and mute the volume". that competition had been over for HOURS. There was no excuse for not saying "here's what happened". It's not like they're actually going to show what Spain, Brazil and France do on late night. Their just waiting til then to tell us peons. :eyes:

4. NBC's coverage gets worse every 4 years
I remember how much of a contrast it was to ABC's coverage in 1984. They seemed to treat the Romainians fairly, as well as the Chinese, but they did kind of blow of the Australians, the Russians and the Ukrainians.

6. As bad as CBS is too...
I dread the coming day (can't remember if it's 2006 or 2010) when NBC has the Winter Olympics as well. I may just have to shoot myself in the head.

7. bill maher's rant was great
about all the damn melodrama they show about some atheletes. obstacles overcome etc. Maher said that if people wanted to hear 4 hours of incessant melodrama and sob stories, they'd listen to their wives.

11. Exactly what is wrong with non-political entertainment?
Just curious. There seems to be a real no-fun, wet-blanket contingent here lately.

10. I've completely given up watching the Olympics
One of its great virtues was that it was live tv, that you'd see countries and sports you'd never normally get a glimpse of, and that you got to follow stories as they developed spontaneously.

Now it's almost all on tape delay. It's edited down to show only the Americans and the winners -- which kind of eliminates any suspense about who's going to win. It's heavily slanted towards the stuff you already see far too much of on television, especially team sports. And the "stories" you get are the ones the network decided to feature in advance rather than what might develop in the course of events.

In other words, there's very little of anything I'd actively want to see -- and even that is chopped up and reduced to predictability. Better to spare myself the frustration and find more interesting things to do.

Check the cable networks and you'll see plenty of live events.

14. Hey, I'm flipping around now and it's really cool
US vs. Denmark in badminton on Bravo.

Mexico vs. China in women's beach volleyball(!) on Telemundo.

Cuba vs. Nigeria in boxing on CNBC.

All the good stuff.

The commentators are so over the top, it's getting difficult to watch. Since I have been watching gymnastics at the Olympics since I was a CHILD, it is perfectly evident to me when a young woman almost falls off the beam that she may get marked down. I don't need the commentators to yammer yammer yammer yammer yammer yammer to fill every single goddamn second of airtime.

NBC, this one's for you: Your Olympics commentators either need to STFU, or I'll start taping it and editing out the commercials you need to pay for your coverage.

I'm now on hold at DISH Network. Maybe they can explain to me why DISH still refuses to carry the CBC.
