The AquaFina commerical changed the words to "I feel Pretty."
She no longer says "I feel pretty and witty and gay." She says bright. Do people get offended when gay is used as happy? I'm seriously asking, because I don't know.

1. The first stanza DOES say bright

I feel pretty,
Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty and witty and bright!
And I pity
Any girl who isn't me tonight.

In fact I can't find 'gay' in the lyrics anywhere... check it out.

2. OH. OK...I thought they were trying not to offend people...
Which I kinda thought was silly, considering what gay really means and what it used to be used as.

3. This was discussed before in another thread

It's a much more innocent reason.

The placement of the song within the performance and the time of day was changed between the Musical play and the film and the scene was moved to daytime so the word tonight was changed to today requiring a rhyming change from bright to gay.

Apparently the Aquafina people chose the play's version, either because that's the one they noticed when they looked up the lyrics or because of political correctness concerns. However, they're safe and justified choosing either one - plausible deniability at worst.

4. I hope they cleared this change with Stephen Sondheim.
Since he wrote the lyrics to this song. :-)

5. I saw a high school production of "Carousel" once, where
they changed "You're a queer one, Julie Jordan", to "You're a STRANGE one, Julie Jordan."

It just sounded, well, strange. :eyes:
