I love the Olympics!
Despite all the the Olympic-bashing threads here lately, I want to come out in support of the Olympics. What's wrong with liking something that will take my mind off the evils of the world for two weeks?

I love athletic competition. It's cool to see people who have worked hard, get to this moment. Sure you have your bad apples but doesn't everything in life? My friend went to the Olympics in 1992 and we couldn't have been prouder.

I will agree the coverage on NBC blows big time. What's with the negativity here on DU lately? I think it's getting to me a bit.

1. Me too :-)
Well, not all of it, but I love love love gymnastics & swimming.

That Japanese swimmer who won gold doing his little dolphin kick cheaing stuff really irked me something awful, though.

2. Cheaters of all kinds irk me
What's the point? I mean, in his heart, he knows he cheated to win. That's gotta make you lose sleep at night.

4. Yeah I love it
People are so cynical these days...BBC News had a discussion on its website, and most people agreed the Olympics are irrelevant and in the light of drugs and political corruption will not be watching.

But I still like them. It's the spirit of cooperation and competition (the Iranian wrestler excluded). Its like the McDonald's commercial said. There was a runner (not like he got where he was eating at McD's) who says "why do I care so much about this race? Because for those 9.9 seconds, I represent all that is good in the world." Ehh, call me an idealist :)

I personally love track and field. There's been all this talk about swiming and Michael Phelps (whos not doing so hot- A gold and a world record yes, but two bronzes when he was supposed to get eight golds), but for me there's nothing like the crack of the gun as all the camera flashes go off and the runners take off down the track.

That and a few LSU grads are in track and field this year.

5. Track and Field is my favorite
I cant wait for that to start.

Personally, I think many people are jealous of athletes and just want to rain on their parade. Mean, maybe but people suck.

6. I can't wait for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver
I prefer watching the winter games. I'd rather be watching TV inside in February than in the summer. They are also smaller and more manageable.

Other things to look forward to:

1. More live coverage (for the US anyway) because we are in a North American time zone.

2. First urban winter Olympics ever.

3. First winter games in a not very wintry city. Hell, people golf in February here.

I do love the Games though. I think that the true athlete, the one who doesn't cheat, can teach us a lot of life lessons. It takes a great deal of dedication on perseverance to make it to the podium in the Olympics.

I also think that the competition can bring people together. We have many unity issues in Canada, but when we won both golds in hockey in Salt Lake, the cheer could be heard (almost literally) across the land.

8. Skiing will be in Whistler
But Vancouver will be far and away the largest city to host a winter games. Unlike the summer games which are often in large centres, the winter games are held in smaller places like Lake Placid. Even Salt Lake is much smaller than Vancouver.
