Know what other musical performer died on August 16th?
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 06:00 PM by NightTrain
Thirty-nine years to the day before Elvis passed away, the 27-year-old Delta bluesman, Robert Johnson, died of poisoning in a Mississippi barroom in 1938. While I certainly have no problem with folks commemorating Presley's death, I also think it's a shame that Robert Johnson's premature passing often gets overlooked because of Elvis. Well, I'm not letting Robert Johnson's death get overlooked at DU.

Rest in peace, RL!

1. Another one for you
The renowned Pakistani qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who died exactly 20 years after Elvis. The likes of Peter Gabriel called him "the voice of the century."

5. He was playing a gig at some barroom in Mississippi.
Between sets, Johnson got a little too friendly with the wife of a jealous husband. When Johnson wasn't looking, the livid husband slipped some poison into the bottle of hooch from which Johnson was drinking. The great bluesman died shortly thereafter.

At least, that's the legend. Christ only knows if the reality was even close!
