I've seen it a few times, and it really is jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

6. I did too - at the NY world's fair - probably 1964 on a moving ramp that
swept you by it. It is amazing. HUGE (twelve feet tall or something?) Just heart breakingly sad and powerful. Sacrifice and mourning for what one must do for righteousness in the fight against evil.

8. It's in St. Peter's but now is behind bulletproof glass since
Mary's nose was smashed by a hammer-wielding malcontent. Her nose was repaired well enough but they're not taking chances now. Leonardo's "Virgin of the Rocks" at the British Museum is also behind bulletproof glass now, had to be repaired after a shotgun blast. Why people attack artworks is beyond my understanding.

10. I remember that! My trip to that World's Fair was 1965.
I have since seen it in Rome, behind the bullet-proof glass. A wonderful sculpture.

13. I also saw it at the NY World's Fair.
It's a beautiful statue. And I also thought the moving sidewalk was way cool! (I was only 9 or 10 at the time.)

14. I saw that too... I was just a kid at the time.
Unfortunately, I didn't appreciate it for what it was worth.

17. According to the site in the link in the main post
Mary would stand over 6'6" if she could get up. In order to create the desired effect, Michelangelo has Mary all out of proportion. It may not look it, but in a sense it is expressionist sculpture.

I wasn't familiar with the work, but the pathos is captured perfectly. This is every mother grieving over her son.

12. I once took a ballpen hammer to it, but nobody laughed.
Look, people. Michaelangelo meant for his sculptures to be INTERACTIVE! Geez, lighten up.
