8. Went to Baskin Robbins the other night...
Edited on Tue Aug-17-04 01:14 AM by LowerManhattanite
...and Hotel California was on. In spite of having to hear 20-plus shaggy-haired, black t-shirted fellow music classmates feebly try to pluck out that solo on cheap-*ssed school-bought acoustics, and in spite of hearing it every 19 minutes on WABC-77 in 1977, ad yes...in spite of being tortured by hearing it sung at a karaoke bar in Aspen by a drunken opera tenor...

I hadn't heard the song in maybe a year or so. That guitar solo came and dammned if I didn't find myself bopping along to it. Give the "devil" it's due---as overexposed as the song may be, it is as perfect a piece of ersatz rock/pop that's ever been made. If you get away from the song for awhile and then have it sneak up on you, it's damned fine. Guess I'd been out of the Eagles loop for awhile, 'cause "I Cant Tell You Why" came on next and damned if that wistful little number didn't pack a little wallop as well.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder I guess. :)

27. I love the Gypsy Kings' version.
It was on the Electra/Asylum Records anniversary tribute back in the 90's, and can be heard, mucho appropriately, as Jesus licks his purple ball in Big Lebowski.

Well, lessee...

Love Forever Changes
Pixies Surfer Rosa
Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane over the Sea
Skip James The Complete Early Recordings (Yeah, it's a comp. Deal.)

That said, I don't think I could live without Trane's A Love Supreme, Dylan's Blood on the Tracks, Histoire de Melody Nelson by Serge Gainsbourg, Wire's Pink Flag, or The Room Isn't Big Enough by Ego Summit.

Not to mention the Harry Smith-collected Anthology of American Folk Music.
