Fingerprint Scanners at work...Rights?
Where I work they are talking about installing a fingerprint scanner. Actually, I guess it's already a given that it will be done. I haven't heard anything about it. No notices saying this is what's happening. I saw a letter in my bosses mail (which I pick up every morning).

Is this legal? (I'm assuming it is, naturally.) Don't they have to have privacy literature to sign?

1. For what purpose?
The ACLU down here is big on this issue. Maybe they are up there, too.

6. I'm not 'against' it. I just want to know...
What they plan on doing with the information. Apparently this is supposed to be happening soon and they've said nothing about it.

4. Well I would think your employer has the right to make sure he knows who
is an employee and who is not - and fingerprints are one way to do that. - OTOH - is he allowed to "share" that fingerprint data with the FBI? I would hope not - but since the passage of the Patriot Act and John Ashcroft being AG, all bets are off.

5. Though I am Self-employed
I work for a company on an on-going basis and in order to get paid I have to punch in on the time clock. I have been advised that I will have biometrics taken in the near future (finger print, eye) for identification purposes and that will take the place of punching card.

It didn't concern me then and after thinking about it the only thing that bothers me is if access to these records were given to 'certain parties' that would bother me. Otherwise no right are violated.

8. In my workplace it is part of the time clock...
it makes it harder for people to punch in and out for each other.
Mega Marts, like the John Ashcroft, simply assumes everyone is as crooked as the executive staff...resulting in pages of rules for the underclass.
