2. Schenectady
Schenectady is an ancient town (by US standards) in upstate New York. It derives from a Dutch word that means "jobless armpit of the world". Historic, beautiful, and dirt fucking poor. It's a great place to be from.

106. Here's a funny story about Schenectady
Back in the 70's, there was grafitti on the State Street bridge that proclaimed SUSAN IS A PINHEAD. It was there for years, until the Schenectady 2000 Committee complained loud enough and forced city hall to save up enough money to paint over it.

Shortly thereafter, someone opened up a bar called Pinhead Susan's.

Edited on Tue Aug-17-04 03:03 PM by CO Liberal
This is the Church of the Assumption. I made my First Communion and confirmation there, and served as an altar boy. My first wedding took place in this church, and my children were baptised here. And my parents had their funerals in this church.

Source: http://www.morristown-nj.org/

This is the Morris County Courthouse. I received both my divorces in this building. The Karen Ann Quinlan case was also heard in this building.

Source: http://www.morristown-nj.org/

This is Morristown Memorial Hospital. My children were born here, and my parents and my first wife died here.

Source: http://careers.hodes.com/

This is the Ford Mansion (aka "Washington's Headquarters"), now part of the Morristown National Historic Park. General George Washington used this house as his headquarters during two winters in the American Revolution, while his troops lived in Jockey Hollow, a few miles south of town. One of those winters was more severe than the one at Valley Forge, but Valley Forge got more publicity.

And this is the Morristown Green, a park in the center of town. I spent many an hour here during my high school years hanging out with the other hippies....

120. I didn't get to pick the area of my upbringing, but I liked it.
Judging an area by its school doesn't work anyway. How many people from the school do you think actually live there?

where the aerospace industry reigns, and about 20 miles from Edwards Airforce Base. The pic is from the Blackbird Airpark, which I can see from my house (in the winter when the leaves are off the trees).

Edited on Tue Aug-17-04 06:01 PM by Xithras

That picture was taken in the 1940's, but believe it or not the only real change is the addition of pavement to the roads. If anything, this town has shrank since the photo was taken (that's changing of course, with developers planning lots of new subdivisions there with dreams of Bay Area $$'s in their eyes). This town is so small it doesn't even have a fire department anymore.

BTW, I've always taken hometown to mean the place you grew up. I haven't actually lived in Valley Home for 15 or so years, and have no plans on going back.

You still were.

I know some QBY kids, but the problem I run into around LG and Queensbury is that everyone owns a restaurant or has doctor/lawyer parents. I don't and that creates so many social problems. I like LG better than QBY because there's less kids to deal with.

The city may not be the most lovely, but one cannot beat the people of Milwaukee. They are the epitome of a geekish, square hipness that makes them wonderful.
