Nice, right?

Here's an approximate account:

(3:00PM CST)

(Phone rings.) IconCat: Hello?

Caller: Hello, Mr. IconCat? This is Mr. Bob Smith at X.

(Realizing that he had been interviewed by Bob at X nearly two weeks ago and never heard a word back from X despite several voicemail messages left for Bob, IconCat jumps up from the computer with anticipation.) IconCat: Hello!

Bob Smith: Well, I have some news on the position. Do you have a minute?

IconCat: Yes, I do.

Bob Smith: I wanted to tell you first that we were all very impressed with your skill and qualifications. You are definitely the best candidate for this position.

IconCat: Thank you!

Bob Smith: Unfortunately, I have some bad news. I was just told that the position--as well as five others in our department--has been eliminated due to budget cuts. I'm very sorry.

IconCat: Oh, okay. Well, thank you for giving me the chance to interview for the position.

Bob Smith: If anything becomes available, we will keep your resume on file.

IconCat: Okay. Thanks again.

Nice.

Just to make myself feel better, I'm going to go ahead and blame Bush. Even if it isn't his fault.

1. Sorry to hear that
But it probably is his fault - indirectly at least.

2. Have you ever considered truck driving?
Edited on Tue Aug-17-04 03:20 PM by Droopy
There is a high demand for drivers even in a stagnant economy.

And besides, you get to see the country and talk on a c.b. radio. How cool is that?

Sorry you didn't get the job. I guess the oinly thing that I can tell you is to keep plugging. Something will come along.

3. Story. Of. My. Recent. Life.
And yes, it IS Bush's fault. Every bit of it.

5. Well, that sucks!
Had something similar happen to me in '01 except it was a hiring freeze. Must still be "frozen" because I never did hear from them...

My sympathies and good luck with your search!

7. That sucks, but at least they let you know.
I've gone to a number of interviews, some lasting all morning, and never heard a thing from them later. When a person takes the time to be interviewed (and is perhaps looking forward to the prospect of getting that particular job), it should be common courtesy to get back to him or her.

8. "If anything becomes available, we will keep your resume on file."
They always say that to cover up the sound of the shredder delivering your resume to the circular file.

BTW - I've been through similar situations. While the recruiter hasn't gone as far as saying the position was eliminated, I've heard "they're re-evaluating their structural needs," which means: they're going to promote someone already in the company and force them to do their old job and the job for which you interviewed, usually at a small pay increase that nowhere matches the cost of bringing on a new person.

You may have been the beard that they brought to the dance to get the internal candidate to shit or get off the pot. That's pretty common these days.
