Question about teen age girls.......
How many pairs of jeans does a 14 year old need to be socially appropriate. My daughter and I are quibbling.....

Your thoughts?????

1. Mmmm
if *I* were the 14 year old girl, I'd say seven. If I were her mom, I'd say four or five should do her, max.

If she wants more ask her if she's willing to do the laundry for them, too.

2. Well..
My 11 year old daughter says you need one pair for each year of your age, so your daughter needs 14 pairs. LOL

4. As many as she can afford with her part-time job?
I dunno.

I know that when I'm a parent, my kids will have to read books for luxeries like games and fancy clothes.

6. I say two - one to wear while she's washing the other.
What does "socially appropriate" mean? I went all the way through high school with only 2 shirts and one pair of pants. I guess it depends a lot on your income level and priorities.

10. Yeah, teens find it very important to "fit in"
For the most part she is not a sheep and does think for herself about most things. However clothing is a means of self expression for many girls her age and it does have a heighted sense of importance because it is something they can control and individualize. She doesn't buy into the designer label, gotta have the $200.00 pair of sneaker kind of mentality. She just wants to present herself well physically as she develops her self confidence.

14 is a tough year for many girls. So far she's doing good.

7. Boy am I a patsy
She almost had me convinced she needed at least 14. One for each day of the week for two weeks. I thought 7 to 9 was reasonable but still alot.

I remember being very conscious about clothing when I was her age as well and I was deprived.......(OH POOR ME) I certainly don't want to over compensate for my own frustration by overly indulging her so I need to reality check sometimes.

8. Depends, how often do you wash clothes?
Give her enough to last one cycle + 2 extra (unless that means giving her more than 7). It seems to be the amount that most girls my age have

Of course, I have like 500000 shirts.

Which makes it not look like i'm wearing the same 5 pairs of jeans over and over.

13. Accck! We go through this once a week, and she has a dress code
at school. She has three pairs of good jeans, one pair of scrap arounds...a pair of khakis and a two pairs of black dress pants. The pants money ends there for us. Anything more comes out of her cash flow.

You need several...perhaps hundreds...of pairs of jeans to make it in the social world of the modern teenager today.

Like...OMG.

The answer is approximately 9, 847, give or take.
I don't get it myself. Then again, I'm a male, and would dress myself in pancake batter if it was on the floor by my bed.

I'm 17 so maybe I don't care quite as much but I only have like 5 pairs of jeans total. And most of those are covered with painting solvents and oil paint.

Yeah, but I'm also not the most popular kid in the world either. If it's important to your daughter, she should spend her own money on whatever is left in excess that you won't buy her :)

on edit: In the long run, the amount of jeans is proportional to nothing, and the square root of popularity is not evenly divisible by jeans. Also the amount of jeans- it depends on WHERE she shops. If she's shopping Old Navy you could get like 10 pairs of jeans. If she shops at Abercrombie... i feel very sorry for you.

We're Old Navy kind of folks
Although there is something about Old Navy that I find disturbing. You are right the amount of clothing is not directly proportional to popularity. She doesn't really give a shit about being popular-She just wants the merchandise.
