What does family mean to you?

How do you define the concept of family?

1. A definition of it is hard to articulate. Conceptualizing it's easier.

I certainly don't think that it has to be limited to those of blood relation. I mean, after all -- there's no relationship (hopefully) between husbands and wives, and yet no one would question them being parts of a family.

A family can also consist of people that we might otherwise just term friends. I mean, I would consider many of my best friends as part of my family.

When it comes right down to it, I think that part of my definition of family revolves around the question of who I would defend -- who I would sacrifice myself for. That isn't everyone, but I would certainly label anyone that I was willing to die for as 'family.'

2. My immediate family

my two cats, my Mom, my brothers, niece, sister-in-laws and a few close friends.

Extended family - cousins, etc.

Family are the people who would take you in if you needed taking in and the animals who would follow you there.

3. I read this somewhere a long time ago:

Family are the people who are in your life for the long haul -- the people you couldn't get rid of entirely, even if you wanted to.
