Well, we chatted a few times. He lived on Logan Boulevard in the 80's and so did we. We would jog together sometimes. A Chicago icon, for sure.

5. they both worked on wls at some point i think....
but when i listened to lujack he was on wcfl (super CFL, the voice of labor).

wgn radio was great too. they had wally phillips and a bunch of other greats. it wasn't music though. it was good talk radio, before the fascists got ahold of all the microphones.

And Lujack and Landecker too. Oh and Dex Card. And Fred Winston...it's all coming back now.....

I remember when WCFL used the motto....."Voice of Labor", since it was owned by the Chicago Federation of Labor (CFL).

9. anybody remember when steve dahl first came to chicago?
he was on wdai in the mid-70s (which later became disco). he had a strange show where he just did comedy by himself. he had other characters in his show (including popeye) and he did all the voices. it was bizarre.

I've only been back about 4 times since then. I used to love Gino's East and the Brassery on Michigan Avenue and Berghoffs next to the Blackstone and Bob Elfmann's sandwich shop right next to the Chicago Theater. The corned beef on rye in that place kicked ass. Are all those places still open ?

and hated food our huge family would eat at Berghoff every year at christmas time. My Dad told the german waiter that the only thing I like is sardines and they made me a sardine sandwich on Rosen's Rye!!!! It was excellent. Very fond memory, thanks. :)

Yes, I grew up with WLS, Larry Lujack, et al. Forgot all those names.

Hey Stevo-Pat- and I went to Bergdoffs one day when we were tooting around and Dad was golfing, and it had changed so much. It was like a fast lunch crowd, still nice inside, but was more of a Yuppie setting. Another myth destroyed-Ha.

23. Lujack did morning drive on WLS.
Lujack started at WLS (having moved over from the overnight shift at WCFL, )doing afternoons from 1967. In 1970 he switched to mornings until he left to go back to WCFL in June 1972. Fred Winston did mornings during most of the time Lujack was gone, although others, such as Bill Bailey and Charlie Van Dyke also did the shift. Lujack returned to WLS doing mornings in late 1976, and eventually moved to afternoon drive in 1986 until he retired in 1987.

Landecker (Records truly is his middle name -- and his mother's maiden name) did nights beginning in 1972, later moving to afternoons in 1979. He left WLS in 1981 for Toronto and then Cleveland, later returning to the station, but I don't think he did mornings. He did hold down morning drive for several years at a Chicago oldies FM (WGJK?), until he was let go earlier this year.

If you want to hear airchecks, go the www.reelradio.com, and do a search for Lujack or for Landecker.

51. Steve & Gary - in the 80's on WLUP
well after the Disco Demolition days, but also well before Steve lost his edge and Gary got married.

I absolutely HATE Chicago radio now. WLS is a well known travesty (Limbaugh, Hannity, Don Wade, Teri O'Brien, etc.). Mancow Muller is an idiot who doesn't have 1/1000th the talent of Howard Stern or Steve Dahl, yet thinks he's God's gift to radio and free speech (just ask him).

Side note: Despite his ignorant political views, Roe Conn can be amusing at times (along with Jim Johnson) on WLS, and that's really the only time I can stomach listening to that station.

54. yes, him too!
:)

He just kinda disappeared didn't he. He was out in LA for a while when I lived out there from '98-00, and now gone. I always liked him too, especially his supporting cast of Buzz Killman, Jimmy "Bud" Wiser, and Pirhana Man. :)

55. Jonny B let the bottle get the best of him, so says the rumor.
Buzz is now on Dahl's show.

Wiser's wife writes a column in the Sun-Times...her name is Paige Weiser (sp?).

Pirhana Man is ???????

59. It wasn't the bottle
More like a vial, if you get my drift. I worked with him often back in the eighties, during my comedy club days. I spent a lot of time banging on bathroom doors, trying to get him to go onstage.

I have heard he is much improved in recent years. I hope that's true.

86. I worked in them
Managed and bartended mostly. I worked in two different clubs in Michigan (off and on) from 1984 to 1989. I'm still close friends with a few of the comics I knew back then, though it seems like a lot of them just dropped of the edge of the planet.

My husband (mkuhl, who also posts on DU) worked as a stand up during that time, though strangely enough, I never met him until I moved to Chicago in 1991. I met him when I worked across the street from Second City, where he worked at the time.

I guess I have a thing for funny guys.

56. I miss WLS
Lujack and Landecker were both on WLS.

That slight echo sound effect on the DJs voices...am AM station playing funk and prog rock and better music than anything on FM...

Yeah, I miss WLS alright. They were the epitome of what AM radio used to be.

Live365.com had tapes of WLS from the 1960s and 1970s to listen to at one time, I don't know if they are still available. Also airchecks.com has some.

I don't even know what format they are these days since it's been years since I've been to Chicago. Let me guess, right-wing news talk format?

61. Yes, WLS is now basically WGOP
it breaks down like this:

- Don Wade and "Roma" (his wife, who isn't even afforded the dignity of her full name). Wade is a right-wing hack who never deviates from the GOP-sponsored talking point of the day. His wife supposedly is the more liberal side-kick, but she's sort of like a female Alan Colmes and either agrees with him 90% of the time or just sits there and says nothing. She's an idiot.

- Jay Marvin & Eileen Byrne - Jay is a self-proclaimed "liberal" who spends more time attacking Democrats than he does being critical of Republicans (some days are better than others). He also has a weird cop fetish that causes him to defend police actions no matter what the circumstances. Eileen Byrne is the typical ultra-conservative fembot. Although they claim opposite political viewpoints, they rarely argue, and the topics they discuss are mostly meaningless (Michael Jackson, Kobe Bryant, Lacey Petersen, reality shows, etc.)

- Rush sLimeball for 3 hours a day

- Roe Conn - a reasonably funny guy who doesn't take himself too seriously, which is good because he pretty much toes the GOP party line when it comes to Bush, Kerry, et al. His partner, Jim Johnson, is equally funny, but is also equally naive re: politics.

- Sean Hannity for 3 hours a day, AND repeats on weekends.

- Teri O'Brien - their main sub host and weekend harpy. She's the worst of them all. Even worse than Limbaugh and Hannity, because she has ZERO radio talent. She speaks in this soft, but horribly monotone voice, and her opinions are every bit as shrill and provocative as Ann Coulter. Sort of like Dr. Laura, except even meaner. She will just hang up on any caller who dares to disagree with her, but only after she personally insults them with a bit of red-bating name-calling. A real piece of work.

All said, WLS is a sad state of affairs. But I listen because there's no alternative when it comes to political discussion, and at least I can know what the latest GOP spin is. Sort of like opposition research. If only Air America would return.

84. anybody remember when whitesox games were on channel 44?
i was a cub fan but i loved watching harry caray and jimmy piersall call the sox games. for a while viewership of the sox must have sucked royally because they were on channel 44 (wsns?) for a while.

it was impossible to tune the channel in perfectly....it was always staticky and snowy. the coolest thing was the endless amount of falstaff commercials between innings.

85. Daddio Daley
The musical host you dig the most. Played jazz, soul, blues. He died 2 or 3 years ago. He taught me there were alternatives to Patty Page the Four Freshmen and the rest of the whitebread shit that was so big in the early fifties.
