I've got a female Black Widow in a jar on my desk
One of my co-worker's son caught it.

What should I do with it?

Thumb wrestle?

6. In all seriousness, you should bring it to a zoo.
A woman here in Chicago found a black widow on her bag of grapes. She brought it to the Lincoln Park Zoo (which is free to the public), and they put the spider in an exhibit where she will be spoiled for the rest of her little spider life.
:)

9. Release it in a Remote Area
Check what kind of habitat it likes, then release it. Animals don't have to be cute and cuddly to be protected. If it exists, it has a niche in some ecosystem. It belongs here.

10. Cue Vincent Price
Leaving lepidoptra - please, don't touch the display, little boy, aha cute!
Moving to the next aisle we have arachnida, the spiders, our.. finest collection.
This friendly little devil is the heptothilidi, unfortunately harmless.
Next to him, the nasty licosa raptoria, his tiny fangs cause creeping ulcerations of the skin *laugh*.

And here, my prize, the Black Widow. Isn't she lovely?.. and so deadly.
Her kiss is fifteen times as poisonous as that of the rattlesnake.
You see her venom is highly neurotoxic, which is to say that it attacks the central nervous system causing intense pain, profuse sweating, difficulty in breathing,
loss of consciousness, violent convulsions and, finally.. death.
You know I think what I love the most about her is her inborn need to dominate,
possess.
In fact, immediately after the consummation of her marriage to the smaller and weaker male of the specie she kills and eats him - *laugh*
oh, she is delicious.. and I hope he was!
Such power and dignity - unhampered by sentiment. If I may put forward a slice of personal philosophy, I feel that man has ruled this world as a stumbling demented child-king long enough!
And as his empire crumbles, my precious Black Widow shall rise as his most fitting successor!

26. The horror that he'll bring
The horror of his sting
The unholiest of kings..
The Black Widow

Our minds will be his toy
And every girl and boy
Will learn to be employed...
The Black Widow

Love me (yes we love me)
Love him (yes we love him)
Love me (yes we love him)

He sits upon his throne
And picks at all the bones
Of his husbands and his wives he's devoured
He stares with a gleam
With a laugh so obscene
At the virgins and the children he's deflowered

Love me (yes we love me)
Love him (yes we love him)
Love me (yes we love him)

Our thoughts are hot and crazed
Our brains are webbed in haze
Of mindless senseless daze
The Black Widow

'Cause words he says are true
We're all humanary stew
If we don't pledge allegiance to
The Black Widow

27. My brother got bit in the ass by a black widow spider.
While using a porta-john during his annual two-week stint in the Naval Reserves in VA. He swelled up something awful, and could have died if there hadn't been medical treatment handy.

I'd get rid of the little varmint.

28. BW bites are rarely lethal
I have a big problem with them every summer and have been bitten three times. It hurts like heck, you ALWAYS get some serious swelling around the bite area, but they are generally only lethal to small children, the elderly, or people who are already suffering from other health problems. It's true that black widow venom is more powerful than rattlesnake venom, but you have to remember that they only inject a miniscule amount of venom compared to a snake. They evolved to kill insects, not people, and their dosage is adjusted accordingly.

My opinion? Dump it out and squish it. Do NOT keep it around your house. If the BW sits in there long enough it will drop eggs, and the baby widows will easily escape through your air holes. You do NOT want a house or office full of black widows!

Spiders don't have a nervous system like we do, and don't feel pain. Dump it out and squish it, but be careful...they can be quick and I've seen them jump up to a foot to escape mine.
