In the spirit of nerdiness -- a contest for a star!
My previous thread seems to be a hit, and since we seem to have a lot of nerds, a lot of newbies and a lot of newbie nerds (not to mention starless longtime posters who happen to have a few drops of nerd blood)...

So -- Tell me your best nerd story. What makes or made you the biggest nerd ever? Be specific. "I played D&D in high school" isn't going to cut it. "I played D&D on prom night, while my date was ready, naked and fuming in the back of the limo" -- we're getting closer (even though one could legitimately argue that a true nerd wouldn't have a prom night. Fair enough.)

Geeks and dorks also welcome to apply.

I will provide a star to the winner of the nerd contest. Entries must be time-stamped by noon CDT tomorrow (Thursday). You have until then to post. People who already have stars are welcome to post in this thread, but I won't make a donation on their behalf. They can, however, PM me with the name of a deserving starless person, and if they win the contest, I'll award the star to the surrogate (I will not reveal names PMed to me, only the contest winner). (Hope that makes sense.)

All decisions are mine, arbitrary and final.

See -- I make things complex that should be simple. Nerd city.

Show me what you got!

1. Umm...
I didn't go to the prom. Or to graduation. Just didn't give a shit about high school, even though I had good grades. I realize that doesn't constitute a good nerd story, or a story at all, but one story does not a nerd make.
There are countless examples of me either knowingly or unwittingly ignoring attempts by girls to get my attention. I look back on them now with sheer amazement at how thick I was. "So THAT'S why she unzipped her front!" lol! I mean, I literally had girls invite me home for the night, parents away, and turned them all down. Does that qualify?

2. Well, if you can provide a specific story within the "no sex threads" rule
...sure, it qualifies.

3. how's this for nerdy?
Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 05:54 PM by Kaelinn
I met my husband at nerd camp (Missouri Scholars Academy 1998 to be exact). We were sitting next to each other during an attendance-optional lecture on the theory of relativity.

It's not passing up naked chicks in limos in favor of D&D, but it's still pretty geeky IMO.

Edit: does being a spelling Nazi make me more or less of a nerd?

5. Kick!
:kick:
Come on people -- surely a star for yourself or a loved one is worth a little digging into the recesses of your past...

7. here's my entry
This was just last night, while my wife and I were watching the men's gymnastics competition. Some athlete or another was doing the parallel bars, so I break into song in my lounge singer voice:

It's the parallel bars
If you extended them to infinity
They wouldn't intersect
So they're parallel

That was enough to get a serious :eyes: from my wife, but I didn't stop there. Next I had to go into lecture mode:

"You know, even the uneven bars are parallel. The plane they describe isn't parallel with the floor, but the lines themselves are parallel. I bet it would be more interesting if they had a skew bars event."

It's not unusual for me to try to make geometry-themed small talk.

I'd say that's one of the hallmarks of nerdiness; to have a completely distorted sense of what topics constitute appropriate conversation. Also, using semicolons.

9. When I ran for honor society president...
I made posters with drawings of Elvis's back, as if he were running away from a camera. The poster said, "Elvis sighted on campus casting vote for jchild for honor society president." Then I went into this elaborate story, on the posters, of how Elvis felt I was the best candidate, and I even added little Elvis comments, like "jchild is the only candidate known for TCB...taking care of business."

I also bought lots of bags of Dum Dum lollipops, and put little fliers on them saying, "Don't be a Dum Dum. Vote for jchild, honor society president."

So, there's my nerd story. :silly:

10. Here is a nerdy moment of mine
A few years back when Aaliyah died in a plane crash, a friend asked me if I had heard the news. Now I NEVER listen to modern music, know nothing of that whole scene, so when she tells me Aaliyah died, I'm confused. I tell her aliyah is term used for Jews immigrating to Israel and also too used as a term for being called up to the reading desk in a synogogue and reading from the Torah. My friend is like, what in hell are you talking about? She is a singer, and starts naming songs. Whatever, still never heard of her. I got the same look as when I asked her if this one girl on tv was the lead singer of Pink. "She's not the lead singer, she IS Pink!"

My family and friends are used to my random facts interrupting their stories and I get teased about it all the time.
