The terminally Clinton-obsessed were suddenly off that one track, forced to construct arguments in defense of their pathetic "veep." Soon, their forum, a morass of threads with no more than two or three replies per day, was humming to life, racking up the posts and views.

Well, they won't know what they had for a day or two, and then it will hit them. Ole Burt will never be back. Those poor saps. I almost pity them.

I know they're going to have heart attacks reading that, but it's the truth. It's true that I did poke a little fun at the pot belly of the poor old sap who stood with his back to Kerry, as if he were making some great political statement rather than looking like a sucker and a fool. And it's true that I doubted the word of the admin, who claims he was spat upon--care to guess in which city and in what year? I did refer to the "spitting myth," which really set them off.

You know what puzzles me. We're talking about these guys who go off to war to face bullets, napalm, land mines, friendly fire... And they have such paper thin skins that they can't BEAR to have someone doubt their word. It's like they think being a veteran entitles you to more respect than your due, to nothing but respect--although we see how sincere they are on that score when it comes to respecting their fellow vet John Kerry!

They pat themselves on the back for that. But in my experience over there, only two--maybe three tops--ever actually engaged in respectful give-and-take dialogue. Was I always respectful to them? Of course not. That's the abominable nature of late American political discourse. But these guys have onion-skin thin epidermises and the sense of humor of gnats. Within two or three posts of an exchange, when they've grappled with the strawman they've made of my arguments or refused to answer my questions, they're congratulating themselves for "handing my ass to me." In the 1990s these same twits bellyached about poor people needing to work for what they get, but in argument, they're always looking for the winning lottery ticket to "kicking liberal ass." No hard work for them!
