Nose piercings...Pros and Cons
Somehow I think I've said yes to nose piercings for my teens. I refused the cartiledge piercing, the belly button, the tongue. So how likely are nose piercing to get infected? Do they close up when you stop using the hole?

1. I've had a nose piercing for almost 7 years now

Mine has never gotten infected, although I know a few people who've had trouble with theirs. As with new ear piercings, the nose piercing needs to be kept scrupulously clean for the first few weeks. The holes will close rapidly if you don't keep a nose ring or stud in the hole. I knocked a nose ring down the drain while out of town a few years ago and didn't have a spare, and the hole nearly closed up overnight before I could get to a tattoo parlor where someone put a large needle through the hole to reopen it. I almost passed out!

Speaking of tattoo parlors, if your kids go to one, make certain they use good sterilization equipment and wear gloves when they do the procedure. I had mine done by a lady who specialized in piercing babies' ears; she used a piercing gun, and I had no problems.

I can also recommend clear retainers to keep the holes open when you don't want the piercing to show. I'm a law student who represents clients in court, and I wear one of these retainers daily to present a more "professional" image.

2. Thanks..that helps
I appreciate knowing there is a way to hide the piercing when you wnat to appear more mainstream. I can't believe I said yes to this one.

3. I 'm going thru this with my daughter
She informed me when she turned 18 that she was getting her tongue pierced...I thought she was joking to get my approval for the belly button-nope.
She now has tongue, belly button and upper ear cartilage pierced. AND she just got her nose pierced. She said it bled ALOT and was excruciatingly painful for the first week (as well as swollen) and if she had known that this would be the worst pain-wise, she wouldn't have done it. Ironically, this is the most asthetic of her "enhancements". I'm glad to hear these heal up quickly! Oh, and yes, lots of care is needed. Peroxide, baby wash and cotton swabs all over the bathroom....sigh

4. The tongue piercing I don't understand
I think the other piercings are attractive. Thanks for the commiseration and welcome to DU.

7. Thanks for welcome
I think the tongue piercing is deeeeeesgusting- and tried to tell her so. But realised that I was adding to the attraction so I left it alone. This is a young woman who cried and had to hold my hand a month or so earlier when she needed to have some blood drawn.
(I keep telling myself there are worse things they could do-so I live and let live, as much as possible, lol)
But I look forward to the day she takes it out!
Good luck with your teen.

10. OK..why
I knew that folks said it was better for sex but why?? It's a metal object and whatever. I still don't like tongue piercings.

6. My nose has been pierced since
I did it in my bathroom with an ear piercing gun in 1988...I've not had a ring in well over 2 years, but it's still there. As long as it doesn't get infected, it should be fine. :)

11. I've had my head pierced for years now
I opted for the forehead-to-base-of-the-skull route instead of the F Troop arrow-through-the-temples style. Never had any problems.

12. I've had a pierced nose since 1991
I got it done at a mall jewelery shop with a piercing gun. Professional piercers don't recommend that method, but I experienced no problems. In all these years it's only been infected once. It was a better experience than with my ears, and I have no regrets.

Do get the kind of nose stud called a nostril screw--they keep the hole open, stay in place without a backing, and are the easiest to remove.

13. I will not allow my kids to do that.
They can do whatever they want at 18, but I'm hoping they'll have outgrown such childishly conformist behavior by then.

If they get real rebellious, they will get to go live with grandpa in Japan, where tatoos and face piercings are still a big no-no for teens.
