Do you know any NICE bush supporters???
Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 11:47 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
I was just thinking today, I actually do. My next door neighbors. The only reason I even KNOW they are bush supporters is he let it slip one day, then immediately changed the subject. They NEVER bring up politics, are super nice people, very warm and generous, and their son adores our daughter (he is six years younger) and he brings her little "gifts" all the time (Happy Meal toys he didn't want, usually....worships our girl...).

They've invited us over for dinner several times, he even put down sod (grass) on our lawn when he was fixing bare patches on his and had some left over. I came out at 9 at night to find him arranging and rearranging sod on our lawn! He also has the pest control guy do our side of the yard when they do their house.

She MADE me a beautiful bracelet for Christmas and when the power was out once, they both came over to check to see if me and my daughter were ok (husband works nights and they knew he was gone).

Now, granted, the subjects of race, homosexuality, religion and politics (besides that one time when I was trying to feel him out) haven't come up. So for all I know they could be closeted bigots. But I don't know.....she is Hispanic and he is white. Not that that means they aren't, but I don't get the sense they are....I've met her parents, too, they are from Laredo and two of the nicest people I've ever met....even more warm and friendly than HER. Her mom hugs me every time she sees me and she hardly knows me.

Why he is voting for bush kind of baffles me. But I can honestly say I know nice people who are voting for him.

Is it a fluke?

I almost wish they would open up more on the topic of politics so I could figure this out, but of course it is their right to be private about it.

10. I have extremely nice neighbors, too.
I think some people believe that if you are a Christian, then you must vote for Bush. That's what the book, "What's the matter with Kansas?" is about - how successfully the Rethugs have marketed that idea. I have tried to show them that there are many denominations/churches/religions that do not follow along like meek little puppies behind the Bush Royal Admin, but there is no understanding.

The guy across the street is the hardest working individual I've ever met - a deputy sheriff, and gives everyone anything they need in the neighborhood.

The neighbors we practically live with - 'cause our kid is best pals with their kids (all girls) - also believe in Bush. All the facts and logic in the World does not seem to change things. Really nice - always giving us little gifts, barbequing, inviting us over.

Oh, well! I know your frustration!

18. Agree. It sounds like an oxymoron to me.
But as posed in the original question, it is not about being a Republican. It's about supporting *. I happen to believe the * administration is pure evil. Consequently, I have problems with anybody that supports their evil empire (even if it is out of ignorance) no matter how "nice" or generous or warm or whatever.

I perceive them to have a basic disconnect of values or at least some denial of the consequences of their support. More likely, they're just ignorant slaves of the fascist media.

21. I do, but I don't push it
I know nice Republicans. I think some of them secretly hate Bush and what he's done to our country, but they can't bring themselves to admit it, because it would be like saying the Democrats were right and they were wrong for ever supporting them.

27. i stand by might snap judgement, and the statement that represents it.
i have republican friends, and i believe in a multiple party system.
bush supporters support someone who who is a heinous liar, a mass murderer, and an incurious stooge. his apparatus has done everything in its power to destroy the 2-party system through lies and deceit.
i don't find anything 'nice' about that.

they may act 'nice', but that doesn't make them nice.

Those that hate you to your face... and those that smile and act nice but hate you behind your back.

There are no good Bush* supporters.

11. Being a decent human and being republican are contradictory
"Nice" has no merit. A republican would be "nice" if they thought it would be to their advantage, or if by being "nice" they could take advantage of you for their benefit.

13. Yes, I do know a very nice Republican couple
They live across the hall from me. The wife's very nice, very sweet, and is a bit tad religious for me. She recently came back from a trip and was so excited about the trip that I sat through a slideshow of 300 photos of her on the trip. She asked me to water her plants and I think I overwatered them though because I was so worried the plants didn't have enough water so I'd over-compensate with the water.

I don't like to be political with them because they're such a nice and sweet couple, and I don't want to antagonize them unnecessarily but I do tell them that I've been politically active in Democratic party politics.

2 years ago, we sat out on the deck and argued (civilly) until 3:30 am. He kept on bringing up the imminent Iraqi nukes and the mushroom cloud.

I kept on giving him REAL FACTS.

2 years later, after MUCH cognitive dissonance (and a few more discussions w/myself and a few others), he says B*sh is a boob, and the Republicans need to do better.

He will hold his nose and vote for Kerry.

It may not seem like much - but you would have to have listened to/saw how hard-core he was.

19. Four of my five brothers.
Wonderful people. They're all good fathers to my nieces and nephews. Good men, good husbands, stand-up guys.

They're all RWers, though. They think Kerry will raise their taxes, give their daughters abortions in school without their knowledge or consent, and make their pastors do gay weddings, and I've been utterly ineffective at convincing them otherwise. They're not bashers -- in fact, I know that one of them has had a gay couple (neighbors) in his home several times -- they're just of the "I don't mind gay people as long as they act straight in public" mindset.

My other brother has become very homophobic in the last few years. He's not talking to me now because I refused to sign his FMA petition. That is his only real character flaw, and it appeared at the same time that he got some therapy, so I suspect that he either remembered or learned something about himself that he couldn't handle. These things manifest in bizarre ways.

He gives the best hugs of all my brothers.

I miss him.

of my friends and family are republicans. My Dad is a dem, Mom was a repub till just about 2 weeks ago. Yeah Mom! (She's 86 - there's always hope!)

This is why I'm SO happy I found DU. I needed some normal people to talk to! :)

Forgot to answer the question. duh. If they weren't nice, they wouldn't be my friends in the first place. As for the family, stuck with them no matter what, but most all are good people. My brother is a freeping JERK. He's a jerk period. But being a freeper adds to his 'jerkness'.

So I've got a whole bunch of nice, misguided friends and family.

I don't know any of the rabid neocon types who are "nice."

I know a few of the stupid, blissfully ignorant, misled types who are "nice" people on a person-to-person basis, though it is impossible to consider someone who abets fascism to truly be "nice."

voting partisan at least on presidential ballots. i live in a red state where republicans have a 70% chokehold on the state. alot of them are honest to god decent people. the good majority of them infact. and i can attest to that fact for hundreds of em. the thing is... they dont support bush because he is bush... they support bush because he is republican when it comes down to it, they would rather put blind faith in thier party than think for themselves and consider anyone else.

39. About a dozen or so (out of a possible 200 or so, mind you)
They're decent people, and I like them all personally, but every one says the same thing: he or she simply doesn't believe Kerry is capable or willing to lead a war on terror, and invariably they trot out the line about having France make our security decisions. There isn't any convincing them otherwise. Interestingly, a lot of them actually agree with Kerry on a few domestic issues here and there, but national security as they see it is everything to them.

Apparently, Bush's decision to blow off the UN meant everything to these guys. I don't have much regard for the UN either, but geez...
