Has anyone ever participated in a music focus group?

I'm doing one tonight that involves local radio stations here in Raleigh.

How do these (or any, for that matter) focus groups usually go?

1. you sit and listen to either some music clips or whole songs

and give your opinion - a little dull - how much are they paying?

Is that what you're talking about?

2. I haven't, but it's one of the reasons I don't care for Bon Jovi...

When they were recording their "New Jersey" album, they filled a room full of high school kids, bought them Kentucky Fried Chicken, and played about two albums worth of tracks for them. They asked them to pick their favorites and used the feedback to whittle down the tracks into one album.

Which, to me, is a pantsload. No offense to Bon Jovi fans or fans of music focus groups, or Kentucky Fried Chicken-eating high schoolers.

Music is about creativity, about rattling the cage, about standing out and making yourself heard...not pimping your product to the kids with cash.
