Over 40s: Was "damn right" cut out of the 45 of Theme from Shaft?
I heard the song in a restaurant the other day and didn't remember having heard "Damn right!" in there before. On the other hand, I remember seeing Isaac Hayes make an appearance on a talk show and the host asking him to say "Damn right!" (and wondering what the hell that was about.) I do remember "That cat Shaft is a bad--" "Shut your mouth!" "But I'm talking about Shaft" "Well we can dig it."

Maybe my memory's just shot to hell.:)

1. I remember the same line you remember.
But the phrase "damn right" doesn't ring a bell. But that was a long time ago. Could be that with the censoring they had back then it was cut out. I remember that the word "pregnant" couldn't be said on TV until sometime in the 70's. I remember an interview with Dick Martin saying how in skits they did on "Laugh In" they couldn't say that word. So maybe that has to do with the same kind of censoring. It was early seventies as I recall.

2. Or it might have just gotten lost in the soup of 1970s audio technology
I think "pregnant" was more of a problem in the '50s, specifically with regard to "I Love Lucy."

3. Wasn't "pregnant" said first on "The Dick Van Dyke Show?" ....hmmm

Maybe this'd be a good DU research project.

5. "Damn right," here are the lyrics
Isaac Hayes - Theme from Shaft Lyrics

Who's the black private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
SHAFT!
Ya damn right!

Who is the man that would risk his neck
For his brother man?
SHAFT!
Can you dig it?

Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?
SHAFT!
Right On!

They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother
SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft.
THEN WE CAN DIG IT!

He's a complicated man
But no one understands him but his woman
JOHN SHAFT!
