How can you make a claim like that? I find it disgusting when the Pat Robersons and Jerry Falwells of the world use religion to push a political agenda, and I was hoping not to see this practiced here.

I am not a Christian...I adhear to no religion. I only posted this here..because the right wingers have been bashing Liberals for years now. I found this so fasinating because they have been brainwashed to believe that it is evil to be a Liberal.

Believe me... I am the last one that would try to push religion on anyone... I just thought it was funny that their own book clearly promotes liberal thinking.

Nah. Just kidding. I understand where you are coming from. Still, it is difficult to obtain the right wing's adoration of the free market (beware of false gods) and social Darwinism from the teachings of Christ. Modern Liberal views have their historical basis in the Bible scholarship of the Enlightenment era. It is not by accident that Martin Luther King was first and foremost a preacher of the Word.

And, indeed, if you want to drive a "literal interpretation of the Bible" advocate nuts, please do delve into the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew and James provide more than enough material for driving them nuts, as in "I tell you the truth, ye shall perform miracles that exceed my own."

My only point is, people of faith (regardless of the vintage) need not allow their beliefs to become perverted and coopted by the goon squad. Saving government policy from right wing evangelical Christianity is one necessary goal. In the view of many, saving Christianity from right wing politics and the dogma of free market capitalism is another. Similarly, many Muslims seek to liberate their Word from the blasphemy of predjudice and brutality. Ultimately, of course, for the person of faith this becomes the same task.

Here at DU, we fight for secular political freedom and economic justice. Elsewhere, people must fight to keep their god from becoming a subject of Caesar or the almight Dollar.

They have a petition at www.takebackourfaith.org that demands that certain promenant christians stop claiming that all christians should vote for bush, or kerry for that matter; the subtitle is jesus is not a democrat, or a republican
