Thank you to the kind soul at The Dead concert last night -whoever you are
My husband and I took our 7 & 4 year old daughters to The Dead concert last night. We had tickets on the lawn at Lakewood Amphitheater. Thanks to some butt-head, our 7 year old daughter burnt her finger on a cigarette while playing on the lawn! I put ice on it, and though it wasn't much of a burn, my husband took her to First Aid to get lotion & a band aid to help her feel better. My 4 year old and I stayed and watched the concert.

The smell of ganja was heavy in the air (but not from us). I kept thinking back to the good old days of the Grateful Dead concerts BK (before kids).

Then, while my daughter and I were standing there, a young man came up and asked if he could stand with us and smoke a joint. My 4 year old was sitting on the blanket eating popcorn, so I stood back and smoked the joint with the guy. He said he had seats on the 11th row, and the people he came with didn't smoke and were "snobs". They had come in town from Knoxville and were staying in Buckhead. I guess one of them or somebody's daddy had good connections.

You can flame me if you want, for whatever reason, but I've never had someone just come up and offer to get me stoned out of the blue. Another example of the kindness you can find at a Dead show

I felt pretty guilty when my husband got back and I told him the story, though I knew he wouldn't be mad, just jealous.

Thank you whoever you are!

Great Show!

1. That's a good story
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 08:05 AM by sundog
Something similar happened to me a a Phish show. I was traveling though the states, went to the concert alone at one of my stops. Feeling a little bummed & I was completely dry.

Out of the blue someone came up & turned me on. Ended up being a great night.

I got to see the Dead the summer before Jerry passed on at RFK stadium in DC. Great show, good time.

Thanks for the story :hi:

2. The best buzz is the unexpected one....
Me too.
1983.
Rainbow Music Hall in Denver, Colorado.
Warren Zevon on his acoustic "Learning to flinch" tour.
Just him perched on a stool laying into a 12 string.
I'm dry but content.
After all, it's Warren Zevon for Christ's sake.
Guy next to me nudges my arm and passes me a bowl.
He nudged me about six times during the show.
By the time Warren layed into "Lawyers, Guns and Money" I was flying.

Kind souls are all over.
We just forget it from time to time.

4. The band mentioned several times to VOTE! Some people had a HUGE flag
and were walking around the lawn with it. They brought it to where we were sitting and held it over us and waved it up and down (like the parachute game). The girls loved it.

The flag belongs to all of us!!

5. God I miss the good old days . . .
I remember the Mardis Gras shows in Oakland in '95. I got in late, and the whole show was general admission, so I was stuck way up in the rafters, Phil-side. Could barely see the stage because I was almost behind the stage fixtures they were using then.

But there was a lady, her husband and there two kids there (a girl of around 2 and a boy around 4). The first time I noticed these people was during the opening bands set (David Murray and Octofunk if I recall), and the little 4 year old had his head at the railing of the balcony looking at the stage and said in a very loud voice "MOMMY, WHERE'S JERRY?" At which point I just cracked up. Anyway, we all started chatting and talking, and that turned into one of the best shows I ever went to. Just sharing a bowl and laughing, dancing our asses off and trading stories of shows past.

Great times.

Hard to believe it's been 9 years since we lost Jerry.

Somehow, the shows I've been to since then just don't capture the magic. The people are still kind, the music is still good, but it seems like the . . . exhuberance that used to be there has vanished.

Thanks for bringing back some great memories :)

8. I could never quite understand why anyone would want to . . .
associate that song with someone in a pleasant way though. It was an indictment of Mickey's dad after he ripped off all the bands money.

I mean, the "He's Gone" part I can understand people associating in that way, but the "knife in the back and more of the same" and the "steal your face right off your head" is nothing but a rant about someone they trusted really screwing them over.

Don't get me wrong, I love the song, but it's just so weird to think of it as being considered as a tribute to someone rather than a criticism.

10. This Is *ing Messed UP!

So you tell us you have two young children (under the age where they can reliably care for themselves in a large crowd) and you get STONED?!!

Sweet.

Point 1. Taking kids that age to a concert where people are using drugs is MESSED UP!

Point 2. Accepting drugs while in custody of a 4 year old is MESSED UP!

Point 3. When you became parents, you made an unwritten contract with the kids YOU created, to keep them safe, AND to give up activities that, while fun for *you* were freakin DANGEROUS for/to your offspring!

Shall I ENUMERATE the dangers, for braindead parents?!

1. Decibel levels
2. Drugs.
3. Strangers on drugs.
4. Strangers on drugs offering drugs to kids.
5. kidnapping (remote, but possible)
6. Crowds of stoned, dancing people.

and to ADD to this pestilential brew

7. STONED MOM!

Can you say.... Parental example?! NOW what will you tell your beloved offspring when they come home smelling of weed and ecstasy pills falling our of their pockets?

Jesus H. Christ on toast points with HOLLANDAISE SAUCE, Woman are you MAD?!!

BE Grateful nobody's Dead... and DON'T do it AGAIN!

309

Who gave EVERYTHING up when the boy came! So did the Missus! Yikes.

16. Glad to hear you live such a righteous life! To answer some of the points
you made.

1. Decibel Level - let me say again it was an outdoor concert and we were sitting on the lawn. I could hear the conversation 3 rows behind me better than the band.

2. Drugs - Alcohol is a drug. So is Valium, Tranxene, Lortab, Codeine ..., I guess you've never had any of these, unless of course you've given birth!

3. Strangers on Drugs - Yes, there were a lot of people drinking. There are also a lot of people drinking beer/liquor when we go to a restaurant for dinner.

4. Strangers on drugs offering drugs to kids - I don't remember him offering my daughter a toke.

5. Kidnapping - I never left me daughter unattended, nor was she ever out of my sight. She was safer there with me than at the mall or Wal-Mart.

6. Crowds of stoned, dancing people - I guess you've never been to any party before, let alone a Dead concert. See #2 & 3 above.

7. Stoned Mom - I would much rather have a toke than drink myself to oblivion. Honestly, I'm not much of a drinker. My husband was not stoned.

Also, I don't remember signing any contract when I became a parent. If parents had to take an oath of parenthood, we would have a smaller population, or a lot of homeless kids.

My children were not aware of "drugs" being at the concert. However, they did think it was a very cool experience. They enjoyed dancing, playing ball with the other kids, and getting a lot of attention from other concert-goers. Yes, there is a lot of negative things they could learn from such an experience, if you focus on them. But there is also a lot of positive things they can learn too.

Try loosening up and have some fun. Life is too short.

You forgot to mention the stop at the local crackhouse where mommy whored her kids out for a dose or two, and then onto the local liquor store to buy some rubber hoses for the heroin injections later
