Yet another reason why I'm proud of my Congresswoman.
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 12:53 PM by terrya
This is a plug for my honorable Representative in Congress, the great Jan Schakowsky, of Illinois' 9th District. This is a letter I received from her regarding the recent homophobic bill H.R. 3313, the "Marriage Protection Act". She voted against it, which I appreciated (and I will send her a letter thanking her for her efforts).

But how many people can say they are proud of their representatives in government? I can. For many reasons, among them her being a consistent champion of liberal causes, I can say that there are good people in Washington. And Representative Jan Schakowsky is the best.

Terry

August 20, 2004

Dear Mr. Andrews:

Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to
H.R. 3313, the Marriage Protection Act. I appreciate hearing from
you, and I agree with you.

I worked and voted against H.R. 3313, which would
prevent Federal courts from considering cases that address the
Defense of Marriage Act or the Federal definition of marriage.
Unfortunately, the bill passed the House on July 22 by a vote of
233 to 194. I believe it is a grave threat to our civil rights to
prevent Federal courts from being able act in cases involving
issues of equal rights and personal freedom. I firmly believe that
every person should be allowed to live a long and full life with the
person he or she loves whether the relationship involves same-sex
partners or not. I will remain vigilant in my efforts to ensure that
the civil rights of all Americans are protected. It is unclear
whether the Senate will consider this bill when it returns in
September. I will urge my colleagues in the Senate to defeat this
bill.

Again, it was good hear from you. Please feel free to call
on me if I can be of assistance in the future.

Sincerely,

Jan Schakowsky,
Member of Congress

1. I can say so!!! Our wonderful senators from Michigan...Sen Carl Levin
and Sen Debbie Stabenow. Holding the Republicans's collective feet to the fire and never backing down under pressure!

That's wonderful terry! It's good to be acknowledged for a job well done!

3. me too!
I've been really happy with Lacy Clay of Missouri's 1st district.

He responded very quickly to me when I urged him to oppose a Federal Marriage Amendment, which he assured me he would.

I also recently received from him a copy of the letter signed by well over 100 members of Congress to Tom Ridge regarding concern over the Homeland Security review of postponing elections.

Here is a link to his website on the letter:

4. Much better than the one I received
from our repug Sen. Smith. I asked one question and asked that he answer it. "Exactly how does gay marriage in any way hurt the marriage of heterosexuals?" I got two pages of blather about how he has supported gay rights but not one word to answer my question.
