A man overturned pews, threw artificial trees and then removed his clothes before officers arrested him in Parks Chapel on Wednesday.
Police say the man, Sammy Lee Smith, went into the church at 2503 Murchison Road looking for a place to sleep.
Dwike Johnson and Yvonne Proctor were working in the church when Smith entered. He became upset when they told him he couldn't sleep there, said Sgt. Randy Podobinski of the Fayetteville Police Department.
Podobinski said Smith was unruly when police arrived. Smith hid under a bench as officers approached, then asked whether the officers were looking for him.
Smith then stood on the bench, removed his belt and dropped his pants.
A naked Smith then began to throw things - including the trees - at the officers and came at them with a clenched fist, Podobinski said.
An officer used pepper spray to stop Smith, but he continued forward, wiping his eyes and rubbing his mouth.
One of the officers used a stun gun to subdue Smith.
