Am I the only one who liked the movie "Payback?"
We were talking about Mel Gibson movies last night in the lounge. I said, no matter what, I still love Mel Gibson movies. Sure, he's an EXTREMELY religious person, but he's certainly no Bush supporter. Either way, it doesn't matter, I like his movies.

So, it made me wonder, does anyone else like the movie Payback? I loved it. I think my wife hated it. I'll have to ask her.

P.S. - I like Bruce Willis movies too. I thought Tears of the Sun was great. I know his politics, but I think liking (and watching) his movies makes me better than a mindless freeper who would deny themselves Mystic River because they hate Sean Penn and Tim Robbins. GAWD what a great movie.

1. Payback
was fantastic. I think it's a bit myopic to dislike someone because of their politics, especially entertainers.

3. I agree.
You aren't marrying them, moving in with them or even having lunch on a regular basis - just enjoying their art.
Same with art. If we boycotted those we disagreed with politically, trips to the museum would be rather hilarious.

I haven't seen that movie, but many people disliked Pay it Forward. I thought maybe that was the movie in question. I liked Pay it Forward because it was a true allegory, and didn't cop out for the happy ending.

2. I never did see Payback
I heard it was really violent. Sure he's a nut but he's made some moderately entertaining movies. Bruce Willis has too. Boycotting a movie with a repuke actor makes no sense because in Hollywood there's always bound to be atleast a few liberals on the set or acting in the movie.

8. Or what about the hundreds (thousands)
Of union workers who are employed on a picture. Building sets, filming, sound, etc...

14. I aim to please
But seriously, when you boycott some actor whose politics differ from yours, you're also boycotting thousands of others who work on the picture.

Just like when O'Liely proposed boycotting Evian water or something like that (don't actually remember) but it was bottled in the U.S. by CocaCola Bottling Co. by Americans and shipped by American truckers, and unloaded by American dock workers, etc.... So O'Liely is a fucking "the world is black and white" moron who can't see the big picture.

12. Willis is RW, but...
...he also spends lots of his own money investing in films which otherwise would not have been made, Pulp Fiction and Sixth Sense being two examples.

He loves film, and supports it. I can't argue with that.

4. I didn't like it. I LOVED it.
I dug it's old line 50's style sort of Clark Gable meets Mad Max type theme.

"Well either I get my money or I kill Carter"

"Are you threatenin me?"

"No I'm not threatening you I'm threatening Carter"

5. I have not seen
that one, I'll watch for it. I don't stop watching someone because of their politics. I'm not certain how I feel about that really. Another actor whom I love and is apparently a conservative is Gary Oldman. I keep watching him too. And yes, I also like Bruce Willis.

6. I thought it was an awesome flick
Until I found out that Gibson plundered the screenplay because he thought Porter was not "nice" enough. Could you imagine what the film would have been like without the "nice" Porter? Apparently Gibson was a major pain in the ass during production with all the rewrites and stuff.

9. I think a lot of Hollywood's more powerful stars
Do the same thing. I have to say, I think the nice Porter was better. (not that I have anything to compare it to.) But here was this guy, you liked him, not a bad guy, but he's just laying waste to all these people. Made it really weird in an enjoyable way.

10. Based on Richard Stark book
Richard Stark is a pen name of Donald Westlake. Instead of Porter, the guy's name is Parker. Great books. Really stripped down, fun amoral books.

Payback based on "The Hunter".

Movie was shot in Chicago, too.
