Vietnam War Movies -- Name Some.
Do any of them NOT show "atrocities"? I'm thinking its a pretty commonly accepted concept that "bad things happen when people go to war" and that those things DEFINITELY happened in Vietnam. How popular were/are these movies? I'm just curious.

1. Anyone who denies atrocities occured is a liar
Edited on Sat Aug-21-04 11:45 AM by Mari333
They must be in deep denial

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/vietnam/trenches/mylai.html

My Lai Massacre
On March 16, 1968 the angry and frustrated men of Charlie Company, 11th Brigade, Americal Division entered the village of My Lai. "This is what you've been waiting for -- search and destroy -- and you've got it," said their superior officers. A short time later the killing began. When news of the atrocities surfaced, it sent shockwaves through the US political establishment, the military's chain of command, and an already divided American public.

the more things change, the more they stay the same

3. The Deer hunter, Platoon, Apocalypse Now.
These were all very popular. I also remember "Coming Home" which was about the return home of a Vietnam vet. Since the war was so controversial (and still is) I can't see anyone making a totally positive movie about Vietnam.

Apocalyse Now is one of the greatest films of all time.

9. Hamburger Hill?
You're not thinking of "Pork Chop Hill? Sounds like a similar synopsis. Pork chop hill was either a Korean or World War 2 movie.

gee it is amazing how many films I have never seen. (But then again the last several years I have been on this anti-killing thing...if I read a review and there is a lot of violence, but especially gratuitous violence,I just don't see them anymore.)

8. I read the book Heaven and Earth
and then saw the movie..powerful stuff..powerful.
Im afraid we are right back there now, with a divided nation, Vietnam Redux..a war for nothing.
But this time, the press seems to be asleep and the * admin is making sure of it.

6. I just saw Platoon last night
Edited on Sat Aug-21-04 11:50 AM by fujiyama
It was a disturbing movie and it definetely did show atrocities. After watching it I got even more pissed off about the ads and lies.

It also made me appreciate even more Kerry's own protests after he got back. That took some courage.

11. As A Vet (3 Tours, '67-70)
I would say that Platoon was the best of the few that I've seen. It was a bit overblown, to be sure, but that is because no move could really portray the down time in war. It is very hard to explain the boredom that existed in the context of the war, but make no mistake, it was probably as much the cause of some things having happened that should not have as the military's leadership of the time.

14. The only one I can think of that doesn't contain atrocities...
is Forrest Gump. HOWEVER! Gump is also a fable, no less fantastical than Big Fish or Carrie. The 20 minute 'Nam segment, however doesn't contain any atrocities.

20. Atrocities are NEVER acceptable...
...but we are one of the first generations where when our people came back, their stories could be told visually. (Yes, there were some Hollywood moments, but the point is still there.)

30. How do you conclude that anyone thinks
the atrocities of Vietnam were "acceptable?" I don't know how old you are but I grew up with the Vietnam war as part of my every day life. It was highly covered on radio, television and newspapers and magazines. There was no getting away from it. Unlike WWII and all the wars we have been in AFTER Vietnam, Vietnam was not sanitized or filtered. I don't think there weren't more atrocities than any other war, its just that we saw them in pictures, on the evening news, etc. and we just knew a lot more about them. The government learned after that not to allow too much footage or pictures to be shown. Ignorance is bliss for a lot of people. If they don't see the carnage, the mangled bodies, etc. they can think of the war in a sterile, idealized way and not think about what really happens in wars.

23. Operation Dumbo Drop
is the only one without atrocities, unless you consider boxing up an elephant and dropping it out of a plane an atrocity.

I leave judgement up to you.

26. The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, and one for
neighbouring Cambodia, - The Killing Fields.

I have never seen a movie about the Vietnam War that did not focus on the atrocities, the terrible toll in human costs.

At www.geocities.com/warmoviedatabase/mvietnam.html I thought Eye of the Tiger (1986) was about the war, but maybe not.
