Stupid car- clutch is fading in and out
Suddenly the clutch just wouldn't work. So, I pump it a few times and pressure builds up. Then it goes away. There seemed to be more pressure when facing downhill or after going from downhill to uphill. Plenty of fluid (I think, it's not right up to the rim though)
Can't see any leaks.

It's a 1992 Toyota Tercel, anyone have any ideas?

1. Cracked fly wheel?
That happened to me once. I had to get the whole thing replaced.

Or you can check the auxiliary for the brake fluid - that will drain out too.

3. Get it fixed fast
My clutch was starting to go out, so I had it repaired. The mechanic said that if I had waited much longer, he would have had to replace the flywheel at about $3000.

4. Hydraulic Leak
Edited on Sat Aug-21-04 06:25 PM by Bamboo
Clutch cylinder may have internal leak which would show no loss of fluid, seals are old and same thing happens to brake master cylinder.Worn out clutch disk will damage flywheel but it can be machined smooth.A big clue to a bad mechanic is scare tactics of any kind. When I see a car trouble post without specific details like engine and mileage I think of guys who buy lingere four sizes too small.

Whenever I see a guy pick out stupid little detail like that to insult someone, it makes me think they have a pecker four times too small.

6. clutch slave cylinder
Edited on Sat Aug-21-04 06:58 PM by jukes
is usu the culprit. operates the disengage arm on the side of the tranny. i'd sugg buying one already rebuilt, $35-$65 dollars. 2 hours to install w/ fairly standard (metric) hand tools. will be held on trans bell housing w/ 2 bolts, prol 14 mm heads. don't overtighten, bell housing is aluminum. p/up a haynes book @ the parts store for your year/model. $15/$19 dollars.

japanese cars are very easy to work on.
